Gladiolus thrips

Gladiolus thrips are especially dangerous for gladioli. These parasites not only lead to stunted flowers, feeding on their greens, but also carry various diseases, which in a short time can destroy large areas of planted crops.

Pest control

Proper storage of gladioli corms prior to planting will help protect the flowers next year. Since thrips are afraid of a drop in temperature (after the autumn cold snap, pests hide in the scales of a gladiolus bulb), the tubers should be dug out before a steady autumn cold snap. After that the spoiled "harvest" is necessary for 30-40 minutes. place in the "Karbofos" solution. The recommended concentration of the drug is 40 g per 10 liters of water. Then the bulbs should be washed in clean water and, after drying, stored in a cool place - the temperature should not exceed + 5-6 +С.

Before planting, the procedure for processing the planting material must be repeated, for example, "Phosphorin-K". Thrips is also susceptible to alcohol and garlic. In a cloth soaked in alcohol, it is recommended to keep the bulbs for several hours to destroy the pest. Garlic juice can be used for the same purpose.

It is recommended to prepare the soil for planting gladioli in the fall. Be sure to collect all the leftovers from last year's flower beds, then place them in one place and burn them. Deep digging of the soil in the bed where the flowers grew should be done at the end of the summer cottage season and immediately before planting a new crop. At the same time, it is recommended to constantly change the place where gladioli will be planted.
