Slugs often appear in vegetable gardens after prolonged rains. These pests are usually based on cabbage. They spoil the leaves of the plant, promote decay of the heads of cabbage and can destroy the entire crop. Fortunately, they can be dealt with with both special chemicals and folk remedies. How to understand that slugs are bred on cabbage
To begin with, let's analyze what such a pest is. It is a small (up to 5 cm) gastropods with an elongated body of dark (almost black) color. He leads a nocturnal lifestyle, in the daytime he often hides in logs, decayed wood.
You can recognize their appearance on cabbage by the following signs:
- The plant stops growing, begins to ache and wither.
- Large holes appear on the foliage.
- In the morning, silvery mucus is visible on the plant.
When these signs appear, the gardener must immediately begin to fight the mollusk. Otherwise, it can destroy the entire crop and even infect the plant with such dangerous diseases as powdery mildew and late blight.
The pest rarely stops on cabbage and can attack neighboring crops, including tomatoes, zucchini, eggplants.
Pest control rules
To quickly and effectively deal with shellfish in the garden, proceed as follows:
- First, reduce the number of pests on the site. Fence the cabbage with cans, bottles, plastic pegs. These obstacles will deter most pests.
- Arrange baits: small containers of sweetened water. The slugs will crawl into them and soon die.
- Before processing the leaves with folk remedies, collect some of the shellfish by hand. This can be done in the dark. Pests can be placed in a jar and then burned.
As for the processing of the site with folk remedies, then it is carried out 2-3 times. After that, the pests disappear until the end of the season.
Effective folk remedies
For pest control, solutions with a bitter taste or pungent odor are used. Slugs can't stand them. The most effective in this matter are ammonia and vinegar. Let's consider these tools in more detail.
Alcohol treatment of cabbage
This remedy not only repels slugs, but also helps to increase the green mass of cabbage. Apply it like this:
- 4 tablespoons of ammonia are poured into a bucket of water.
- The resulting mixture is sprayed on the garden bed.
- After 5-7 days, the procedure is repeated.
If there are many pests, traps are used in parallel with spraying.
Vinegar
This agent repels slugs with a sour smell and taste. It is applied like this:
- 100 ml of vinegar is poured into 10 liters of water. Mix well.
- The mixture is poured into a spray bottle, the plant is treated, paying special attention to the space under the leaves.
- Re-processing is carried out after 4 days.
To increase the effectiveness of this tool, vinegar is sprayed not only on the plants, but also on the soil around them. Such processing will not affect the taste properties of cabbage.
