In order for tulips to really delight you with an early and friendly flowering, you need to responsibly observe the rules of planting, cultivation and care.

Dates of planting tulips

Tulip bulbs can be planted in spring or fall. Autumn planting is mainly used. Those planted in spring will bloom later and the flowers will be small, because the rooting process will take a lot of energy from the plant.

If tulips are planted in the fall at certain times, depending on the air and soil temperature, the bulbs will have time to take root and stock up on nutrients. They will not sprout, since the air temperature will already be too low for germination. After overwintering in the soil, in the spring they will grow, and the flowers will be large and bright.

Root formation takes place within a month, so you need to plant the bulbs before the onset of frost, but not too early so that they do not start germinating.

Landing dates in the regions

In different regions of the country, the timing of planting tulips may vary. It depends on the time of the onset of autumn frosts, on the timing of the establishment and density of the snow cover, the arrival of spring. Taking into account all the features, you can draw up a landing calendar for different areas:

  • Siberia and the Urals - from mid-August to mid-September;
  • Middle zone of Russia, St. Petersburg and the region - September;
  • Southern regions, Moscow and the region - October;
  • Krasnodar region - November.

Of course, the timing may shift depending on the weather changes, but basic boundaries should be adhered to.

Lunar calendar for tulips

The lunar calendar has long gained particular popularity when working with plants. The dependence of plant growth and development on planting time in accordance with certain phases of the lunar cycle is taken into account by most gardeners. In accordance with the lunar calendar for 2020, the following days will be successful for planting tulips:

  • August - 15,16,22 - 26, 28, 29;
  • September - 1 - 3, 6 - 9, 11 - 13, 18 - 25, 29, 30;
  • October - 4, 5, 9, 10, 14, 15, 17, 18, 21 - 23, 26, 27, 31;
  • November - 1, 2, 4 - 6, 12, 13, 22 - 24, 27 - 29.
The days of the new moon and full moon are always considered unfavorable for planting.

Planting and care rules

The tulip bulbs dug out after the end of flowering are preserved until planting in a dark cool place, treated with a weak solution of potassium permanganate and dried.

When choosing a place for planting bulbs, you should focus on flower preferences. A sunny place is best, where the snow will melt first, but at the same time, the melt water will not stagnate. With excess moisture, the bulbs can rot.

It is not recommended to plant tulips in the same place for several years in a row.

The soil is recommended to be light and moisture-permeable, you can add sand or peat. If you add phosphorus-potassium fertilizer or a ready-made mineral complex for bulbous plants to the soil, the flower will appear earlier and will be larger.

Before planting, the bulbs are well inspected and damaged or with signs of disease are discarded.

Tulips are planted to a depth of 1 - 1.5 times the height of the bulb. If the depth is deeper, the sprout will appear later and may be weakened; at a shallower depth, the bulb may freeze in winter. The distance between the bulbs is also important - it should be 1 to 2 times the diameter of the bulb.

The soil temperature during planting should be in the range of 8 - 10 degrees.

In cold areas for winter planting it is recommended to cover it with spruce branches, which will also serve as additional protection from rodents. It is also necessary to ensure that the snow cover is sufficient, and toss the snow as needed.

Growing tulips is a process that does not require a lot of time and effort, but blooming, they will bring a lot of joy.
