In order for a pear tree to bear fruit and actively develop, you need to know a few simple rules:

  • Perfect planting of the seedling.
  • Timely plant care - mulching, watering, pruning and feeding.
  • Shelter for the winter.

What is spring pruning for?

Fruit trees need to be pruned regularly. This procedure is performed for the following reasons:

  • thinning and crown formation is required, providing a sufficient amount of sunlight for future fruits;
  • removal of young shoots that prevent juice and nutrients from flowing to the main branches with fruits;
  • adjusting the height of the tree, which prevents it from shading neighboring plants.

Crown pruning can be of several types:

  • shaping - helps to give the desired shape to the top of the tree;
  • sanitary - removes dried and pest-infected branches;
  • anti-aging - large branches are removed.

But pruning without knowing the basic rules is not worth it. This can cause the tree to die.

When to prune

The timing of trimming a plant in spring and autumn is determined by weather conditions. They are different for each region. Spring pruning is performed before the start of sap flow in the branches. This is mid-March - early April. In autumn, the procedure should be performed immediately after the leaves are dropped, but before the first frost begins.

The lunar calendar will be an excellent assistant in this matter. Pruning is required for the waning moon.

Experts recommend:

  • use only sharp, clean tools;
  • before the procedure, you should prepare a garden pitch and a "Rannet" solution for processing sections;
  • pruning is not carried out at negative air temperatures;
  • special attention must be paid to the formation of the crown - otherwise, the tree may break and die.

Sanitary pruning is carried out annually - old dried branches are removed. The shaping procedure should be performed every two to three years.

It is necessary to remove shoots growing vertically to the trunk. They do not bear fruit, and the nutrients are pulled out stronger than the rest of the branches.

Trimming is done up to the annular build-up on the trunk. It contains a lot of nutrients that will help the wound heal faster. If you make a deep cut, there is a chance of contamination of the pear with bacteria.

After removing unnecessary branches, the cuts should be treated with garden varnish. If this is not done, then juice will constantly be released on the cut, which will attract insects and will not allow the wound to heal quickly. On a young plant, this procedure should be carried out every other day, so that the sections have time to dry out a little.

It is not worth adding top dressing after pruning. The tree itself will take the necessary amount of nutrients from the ground.
