Good afternoon, my reader. The cat is one of the most common pets. But despite this, there are things that few people know about furry animals.

1. Treatment by cats

Everybody heard about how cats cuddle up to the owner's sore spot. But few people know that there is a whole direction in medicine - feline therapy. It is based on the following:

  • the cat is warmer than a person, and its body works like a compress;
  • vibrations from purring have a beneficial effect on the human body and calm the nervous system.

2. A cat sees worse than a person

In the dark, cats, oddly enough, do not see anything. Her time is twilight, when a large number of rods in the retina and a mirrored tapetum layer allow her to see 7 times better than a person.

But on a clear day, human vision is much better: we see more colors, we have 20 degrees a larger viewing angle, and at the same time, we focus our eyes faster, shifting our gaze from distant objects to loved ones.

3. "I am explaining to you in a human way!"

Meowing cats is not communication. They communicate with each other in poses, glances, and many other sounds: hiss, purr, snort, howl - and all this with dozens of intonations.

And here is the typical feline "Meow!" intended for two types of interlocutors:

  1. Own kittens - this is how the mother cat calls them.
  2. Of people. Wild species of cats that do not communicate with humans almost do not meow.

Some zoologists even believe that cats perceive people as big, but stupid creatures (they can neither lick themselves, nor catch a mouse ...) - and therefore "explain" everything to them as to baby kittens.

4. "Milk step"

Everyone has probably seen how a calm and contented cat massages and crushes the owner's side with its front paws, or simply “treads” on the bed. This movement is called the "milk step": this is how a small kitten massages the mother's abdomen, improving milk flow from the nipples. If an adult cat behaves this way, it means that he feels so good that he allowed himself a little "to fall into childhood."

5. "Your cat takes care of you!"

If a cat brings you strangled mice or birds, you can rejoice: your pet has not lost its hunting instinct. It also means that he feels sorry for you.

Recall that cats can think of humans as big, but stupid. In nature, they carry prey or kittens, or, less often, sick relatives. So the cat is just trying to teach you how to hunt - or feed you.

6. "Open door policy"

A classic situation: a cat sits at the door, meows, demanding to open it - but as soon as the passage opens, it immediately loses interest in the next room. In fact, the animal does not need anything in that room: it only needs control over the territory. An enemy may be hiding in a locked room or prey may be hiding - and on its territory (do you seriously think that you are the owner in the house, and not a cat?) It does not tolerate "white spots".

7. "You do not sleep yourself - wake up another!"

No, cats do not specifically wait for the time when the owner falls asleep in order to arrange a night "tygdyk" along the corridor, revision of shelves and other active and noisy activities. The fact is that the time of day is not important for an animal - they sleep a lot, but in fits and starts. And for the twilight and nocturnal predator, late night and early morning are the time of activity.

In addition, if the cat is alone most of the day, and the owner is at work or at school, she sleeps at this time so as not to suffer from boredom alone. So you are tired and want to sleep - and your pet has slept and full of energy!

8. Mustache - not only for beauty

The whiskers on the sides of the muzzle are vibrissae, hairs of touch. They grow in cats and above the eyes, under the chin, and their counterparts are scattered throughout the body. The cat needs them to navigate in complete darkness, literally "by touch with the whole body." Sometimes, if a cat became blind at a young age, but remained alive, its vibrissae grew thicker, longer and thicker than in healthy relatives: this is how the body compensated for the lack of vision.

9. Valerian and mint

Not all cats are overjoyed with valerian - there are individuals who are indifferent to it, and some do not even like the smell. But in most animals, valerian still causes euphoria. This is due to actinidin, one of the substances in the composition of the plant: it is very similar in smell to natural pheromones that cause excitement in cats.

The nepetalactone contained in catnip ("catnip") acts in approximately the same way.

10. Hero cats

There is an award for heroism in the United States called the Scarlett Prize. It is awarded to those animals who have done something for the benefit of humans or other species. It is named after a stray cat named Scarlett, who threw herself into a burning building several times during a fire in New York, pulling out kittens - and almost died. The firefighters, noticing this, took Scarlett and the kittens to the veterinary clinic. The case was widely covered in the media, the cat itself and her children quickly found new homes - and they decided to perpetuate the heroism of the little animal with an award named in her honor.
