Why a tick is dangerous
The tick belongs to the arachnid class of arthropods. This is one of the most ancient living beings. Outwardly, ticks look like small spiders. However, there is a major difference. They feed on the blood of mammals. Moreover, they attack not only animals, but also humans. In addition, the tick is a carrier of a number of serious diseases. Some of them threaten the infected person with severe disability and even death. These pathologies include viral encephalitis, Lyme disease, hemorrhagic fever.
Ectoparasites are also dangerous for pets. Therefore, measures should be taken in advance to avoid being bitten. For this, the site is treated with various acaricidal agents.
Detection and control methods for ticks
To confirm the presence of parasites in your summer cottage, you should draw a white cloth over the grass in the spring. A waffle towel works best for this purpose. It is recommended to check in the morning after the dew has completely dried. Even if not a single tick is found on the tissue, it is advisable to treat the area.
Popular commercial products with proven efficacy against ticks are:
- Taran Zeta-cypermethrin. The drug destroys various blood-sucking insects, incl. mosquitoes, fleas, bedbugs, as well as flies, ants and cockroaches. The advantage of the chemical is that it does not accumulate in the soil and green parts of plants.
- Tsifox Cypermethrin. The product is intended for the destruction of ixodid ticks. Recommended for fighting rat parasites.
- Sipaz Super Cypermethrin has a broad spectrum of action. Effective even against mosquito larvae. Does not have a negative effect on the respiratory tract.
- Byteks Fenthion is an organophosphorus preparation. Previously used only in veterinary medicine. Then it was approved as an acaricidal agent for the control of ticks in garden plots.
- Breeze Cypermethrin is used at home to combat blood-sucking insects.
Before use, you should carefully read the instructions for the drugs. Processing is carried out only in special clothing. It is recommended to thoroughly wash the skin after contact with chemicals. The work to kill ticks should be carried out in warm weather. No wind is desirable. If precipitation is predicted, it is better to postpone the treatment to another day.
Do not spray plants on which fruits have formed. It is better to start fighting insects 2 months before this moment. Shoots and grasses are processed up to a height of 150 cm. This is because the ticks are unable to climb higher. First of all, it is recommended to treat areas with tall grass, as well as areas adjacent to paths and recreation areas.
It is more effective to fight ticks together with neighbors in the country. In addition, a reliable fence should be installed around the perimeter of the site so that animals cannot move freely in untreated areas and do not become a source of infection. Chemicals are used twice a year: in early spring and late autumn.
Preventive measures
You can prevent mass reproduction of parasites by regularly mowing the grass in the area. Rodents and wild hedgehogs can carry pests, so you should install ultrasonic repellents in the country. In addition, it is recommended to remove weeds and not leave torn dry grass and tops in the garden.
Plant waste that is not used for the compost heap is best burned immediately. This will help kill insects that may find shelter in the waste. Various types of chamomile and other plants recognized as natural acaricides can be planted on the site. They will partially scare away ticks.
