Rules for spring feeding strawberries
When deciding how to feed strawberries in spring, it is necessary to take into account the stages of development and the life cycle of the plant culture.
Experts recommend to be guided by the following rules:
- Bushes in the first year of planting do not need feeding, because nutrients were added to the soil during the preparation of the beds.
- For 2 and 4 years of bushes growth, mineralized and organic fertilizers can be used.
- For 3 years of development of the bushes, it is optimal to use mineral agents for fertilizing.
The first fertilization of strawberries is done in early spring after the snow cover has melted and before the leaves open. In central Russia, this is the second half of April. Top dressing is applied in the process of pruning bushes. For the spring period, it is important to ensure stable growth of shoots and foliage, therefore it is recommended to use nitrogenous fertilizers for fertilization.
Fertilizers in demand for early spring are prepared as follows:
- It is required to make a solution from mullein (2 glasses), water (10 l), ammonium sulfate (1 tbsp. l.). The components are mixed, 1 liter of the composition is poured under the strawberries.
- In water (10 l), it is required to dilute 1 tbsp. l. nitroammofoski, top dressing is applied to the ground at 0.5 liters per bush.
- To create an organic composition, it is necessary to fill the bucket with leaves and branches of nettles, then add heated water. The composition is infused for 3-4 days, then used for root feeding. The product is not filtered, but diluted with water in a ratio of 1:10. When spraying, the nettle infusion must be filtered and diluted with water. A bush requires 0.5-1 liters of the finished composition. Nettle infusion is enriched with minerals (phosphorus, magnesium).
- Chicken manure solution can be used. The composition is filled with water in proportions of 1:10 and infused for 3-4 days. Under the bushes, 0.5 liters are poured. Mullein is bred and infused in similar proportions.
Fertilizing strawberries during and after flowering
The subsequent fertilization of the strawberry crop is planned for the second half of May - June. When the first buds appear, the bushes need potash fertilizers, which increase the taste parameters of the fruits. After fertilization, the berries become more aromatic, and their storage time increases. Foliar dressing improves the appearance of the bushes.
Lack of potassium can lead to non-ripening of the fruit. It is necessary to dilute potassium nitrate (1 tsp) in water (10 l). l.) and water the bushes at a ratio of 0.5 liters per plant. This composition can be sprayed on the leaves and stems of strawberries. For external feeding, you can use a solution of 0.02% zinc sulfate or mullein.
After the end of flowering, to increase the yield of strawberries during the growth of the ovaries, foliar fertilization can be performed using complex supplements with minerals. The concentration of the product should be 2-3 times lower than for feeding the root system.
In the fertilization of bushes, compost is used, which is placed in a circle, the layer density is 5-8 cm.
Wood ash is a universal and high-quality top dressing. The product is enriched with potassium, phosphorus. It is recommended to leave ash after burning potato tops, grape vines, sunflowers. Wood ash from birch logs, straw, coniferous trees is effective.
For the spring period, an infusion of wood ash or dusting the plant with ash is needed. The tool helps prevent plant diseases, reduce the likelihood of rot, mold, yellowing of leaves. It is necessary to sprinkle the bushes with ash (15 g per plant).
Iodine can be used as a prophylactic against strawberry diseases and dressing. A microelement (5-10 drops) is diluted in water (10 l), plants are sprayed with a solution until flowering. The procedure is performed 3 times with an interval of 10 days.
