If something in the domestic open spaces can really do very well, it is a weapon. Domestic designers in this area should definitely be given their due. The best confirmation of this is the new Russian Kord machine gun chambered for 5.45 mm. At the moment, the novelty is undergoing state tests. It's time to take a closer look at her.
The "Kord" machine gun was created quite a long time ago, but a modification chambered for 5.45 mm caliber appeared relatively recently. Earlier, industrialists have repeatedly received information that the Russian army will receive a new light machine gun. Actually, it turned out to be this model, which is currently undergoing state tests. If all tests are completed successfully, the machine gun will go into wide production and after a while the entire Russian army will be equipped with it. It is possible that Kord will be interested in the foreign market as well.
The main feature of "Kord 5.45" is that Russia did not have such a machine gun before. The Soviet Union had its own light machine guns, but there was no light machine gun among them. Traditionally, this practice was more typical for the armies of the NATO bloc. As real combat experience shows, the idea of light light machine guns is very viable. In this case, as expected, the weapon will use a mixed type of ammunition.
It should be noted that the domestic arms business has been going for a light light machine gun for a long time. Today, the RPD is already frankly outdated. Some do not even consider the PKK as a machine gun. As for the PU-21 project laid down many years ago, it never passed all the tests.
It is easy to guess that when creating "Kord 5.45" domestic designers primarily relied on successful American experience in operating the M249 machine gun for 5.56x45 mm cartridges with the same combined ammunition supply. The main advantage of this weapon is its small size and high firepower.

It is also noteworthy that the new "Kord" will be able to use magazines and belts from old domestic machine guns, as well as from a Kalashnikov assault rifle, for ammunition. In addition, a new 60-round magazine was created specifically for the novelty, which in turn fits the Kalashnikov assault rifle! A real holiday of unification.
