Why does the Russian special forces need the RSh-12 revolver, and what is this weapon

The development and production of revolvers is the last thing the domestic arms industry is associated with. Nevertheless, such weapons are also being created in Russia. The most striking and most revealing example in this regard is the RSh-12, a revolver that was created directly for special forces. Could some kind of revolver be better than a pistol? Why do the FSB and some other domestic units need this "big man"?

Russia is the last country on Earth (among the leading arms manufacturers) to associate with revolvers. Nevertheless, one of the most powerful revolvers to date was created precisely in the vastness of the fatherland. We are talking, of course, about the RSh-12 or the "12.7 Assault Caliber Revolver". The weapon was developed back in 2002 in the Tula Instrument-Making Design Bureau JSC. It is noteworthy that initially the designers did not plan to do anything like this. RSh-12 appeared as part of the Exhaust program to create an assault rifle for special forces - ASh-12.

The RSh-12 revolver has a solid metal frame. Power is provided by a drum for five rounds that is reclining to the left. Ammunition is always taken from the lower chamber. Despite the solid caliber, the recoil shoulder of the Russian revolver is significantly lower than that of existing counterparts from other countries. An interesting detail is the reinforced barrel shroud with ventilation. There is a Picatinny rail above the barrel for installing tactical accessories.

The 12.7x55 mm cartridge - SC-130 is used as ammunition. It was developed back in the 1990s for the VSSK Exhaust sniper rifle. All cartridges are subsonic, have a short flight range (up to 300 meters) and have a huge penetrating ability. The armor-piercing variation of the ammunition copes with the healed class 5 inclusive. Conventional STs-130s are capable of penetrating class 3 helmets and body armor.

Today the RSh-12 revolver is in service with the Russian special forces. It is primarily used by FSB units. Officially, the RSh-12 has been in service since 2016 and is used in situations where fighters need a pistol with exceptional penetrating qualities, as well as a huge stopping effect.
