Initially, the Christian church was "catholic" - universal. The split into Catholic and Orthodox occurred in the 11th century, in 1054, when the differences between Constantinople and the Vatican reached their apotheosis. As a result of this event, two new churches were formed, which are quite different from each other. Including in things that seem to many modern people "some little things."

There are many differences between the Catholic and Orthodox churches, especially in matters of liturgical rituals. For example, Catholics are baptized differently from Orthodox Christians. There is also disagreement over the interpretation of scripture. So, Catholics believe in the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary, while the Orthodox regard it completely differently. In the West, they believe in the existence of Purgatory, which will cleanse the souls of sinners, while in the East they are convinced that sinners will burn forever in hell. Finally, church leaders are also treated differently. The patriarch, in fact, is only the chief priest, and the Pope is the deputy of God on Earth.

The most interesting "little thing" in this regard concerns the behavior in the temple during the service. Namely: Catholics - sitting, Orthodox - standing. What is the reason for this? It is noteworthy that even in the 6th century, during the time of the Catholic Church, there were benches for sitting in the temples. The Orthodox Church in this respect has become more severe. It is believed that a person standing during a service is drawn to God. In addition, depriving oneself of certain comforts is a kind of "feat", since comfort is the path to gluttony and fornication.

Catholics, on the other hand, have more in common with the catholic church in this respect and believe that there is nothing wrong with sitting during the service. However, here, too, not everything is as simple as it might seem. So, while reading the Gospel, all Catholics are still obliged to get up from the shops, thus paying some tribute of respect and humility.
