Wooden and rubber bullets: What are such ammunition good for?

Most people are used to the fact that bullets are made of some kind of metal. However, there are rubber and even wooden bullets. Surely many will be interested in what such ammunition for firearms is capable of. The most interesting thing is that the effect of such bullets on a person can be no less monstrous.

Wooden bullets

The first wooden bullets appeared around the middle of the last century in Germany. What exactly they were created for is not clear. According to one of the versions, wooden bullets appeared almost by accident, thanks to one bold experiment with ammunition. Fortunately, making such bullets was not at all difficult. They sharpened on machines in a matter of seconds. The main problem with wood ammunition was that most of the "standard" powder charges simply burst the bullet during firing, rendering it virtually useless. At the same time, it was not possible to reduce the amount of gunpowder, since then all weapons became useless.

The second time gunsmiths remembered about wooden bullets already at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries. The greatest success in this area has been achieved by craftsmen who make ammunition for shotguns. Despite the fact that the craftsmen "taught" wooden bullets to survive a shot with a normal powder charge their effectiveness (primarily the damaging effect) was much lower than that of conventional lead bullets. Therefore, wooden bullets were never widely used.

Rubber bullets

The experience with rubber bullets in gunmaking history is the exact opposite of all attempts to use wood to craft ammunition. Suffice it to say that rubber bullets are widely used today in law enforcement agencies as a non-lethal, traumatic weapon. However, one should not harbor illusions, because even a rubber bullet is quite capable of killing a person when it hits the heart, head, or the area where some other organs are located. In addition, rubber bullets leave severe injuries and even break bones.

There are several types of rubber bullets. First, it can be buckshot. This kind of ammunition is almost ideal for close combat. It inflicts serious injuries, but has the lowest fatality rate for an unsuccessful hit. In addition, rubber buckshot incapacitates the victim in 9 out of 10 cases, which is especially useful when dispersing crowds or arresting criminals.

Secondly, there are molded rubber bullets. They are made from polyvinyl chloride, plastic and hard rubber. The bullet itself is most often a ball or cylinder. Such a bullet may well kill a person, but the fatality rate in case of an unsuccessful hit is often even lower than that of rubber buckshot. It is also important that such a rubber bullet leaves the weakest injuries. At the same time, cast bullets have a terrible minus - when they hit a hard surface, they ricochet well.

Third, there are hard tip rubber bullets. These are rubber bullets in which (inside) a metal core is added to improve ballistic properties. For obvious reasons, they can be considered the most dangerous.
