In the process of renovating a small room, the owners of the apartment are trying to gain at least a little extra space. However, in an attempt to save space, they make serious mistakes that complicate life and spoil the interior. Novate.ru tells what you definitely shouldn't do when arranging a tiny room (unless, of course, you want to turn it into a cramped closet).
1. Large carpet
If the owners strive to add comfort to the room, they will definitely buy a carpet. And let many designers constantly talk about its impracticality, especially if the apartment has home animals, no one can argue with the fact that a room with a carpet looks much more beautiful and comfortable. Textiles are often used for zoning large rooms, for example, a kitchen-living room, but in a small room they look completely different. Large carpets visually narrow the already tiny space, look bulky and messy. Therefore, it is best for the owners of small rooms to abandon such textiles or stay on a small version of a light color. Such a carpet is well suited for highlighting some area, for example, a work or bedside area.
2. Pictures in massive frames
Decor is an insidious thing. You can ignore it and end up with a boring and banal room, or you can overdo it and thereby demonstrate bad taste. The second situation is the choice of large paintings in massive frames as wall decor. Large, bright canvases draw too much attention to themselves, as a result of which the room visually appears smaller.
It is best to give preference to elongated narrow paintings that can visually raise the ceiling. Another good option is a composition of several small posters. You can use thin-framed photographs instead. But make sure that they overlap with the interior in color, and thereby create a complete harmonious picture.
3. Volumetric chandelier
Chandeliers are gradually going out of fashion, giving way to spotlights, wall lamps, floor lamps and other laconic lighting fixtures. A large-scale chandelier hanging from the ceiling with a lot of decorations looks especially ugly. If it is present in a large room with a high ceiling, the situation is not so critical. But a small room immediately shrinks from such a "neighborhood" - the chandelier makes the ceiling heavier, makes the interior heavy and crowded. In addition, it is very difficult to match other lamps to a large-scale chandelier. And given the fact that in any room there should be several lighting scenarios, you cannot do without additional light.
Instead of large chandeliers, it is better to choose neat geometric options that will not attract too much attention. Or opt for spot lighting - it can be adjusted and combined with other devices.
4. Bulky furniture
There is one unwritten rule - large massive furniture should not be present in a small room. A huge bed, sofas with a couple of chairs included, a wall-to-ceiling wardrobe, a large coffee table that everyone always stumbles over. These pieces of furniture are a real taboo for tiny spaces. They take up all the free space, leaving no room for maneuvers.
Many people justify such an interior by the fact that the apartment must have a sufficient number of storage systems, and if it does not differ in large dimensions, then it is not at all surprising that the entire area is cluttered with furniture. However, there are alternatives. For example, instead of a double bed, you can put a folding sofa, instead of a massive rectangular table - round or folding, instead of a large cabinet - two narrow and high copies to match the walls so that they merge with interior. Remember that there should be more free space in the room so that you can feel comfortable there and move normally.
5. Heavy curtains to the floor
Curtains are often used as a bright accent in the interior. However, massive velvet or velor curtains, which look great in spacious rooms, look completely different in small rooms. They visually narrow the available area, create visual noise and draw all attention to themselves. In addition, curtains that reach the floor are dust collectors and are a great toy for children and pets. Therefore, it is best to abandon heavy specimens on the floor and instead purchase light curtains that will hang 10-15 cm below the windowsill. When it comes to the kitchen, you can limit yourself to Roman shades.

Advice: To visually expand or raise the window, it is necessary to hang the cornice above the window, or select a model wider than the window opening.
6. Rich color palette
Choosing a color for a small room is the most important issue that needs to be paid maximum attention. As a base, you need to choose light shades: beige, white, gray, sky blue, powdery, and so on. But bright colors, such as yellow, red, turquoise, are best used in doses and as accents. If you overdo it, then the room will not only become visually smaller, but will also become annoying over time.

As for dark shades, they are best avoided. It is not only about decor, wall and floor coverings, but also furniture. Light interior items will look harmoniously, which in color will approach the walls, ceiling.
7. Open decorative storage
So that the interior does not seem cluttered and sloppy, try to occupy the available surfaces to a minimum. There is no need to force the shelves with collections of figurines, and place all the available cosmetics on the bedside tables and dressing tables. Even if the vials and bottles are perfectly level, they will still create visual noise that will ruin the "reputation" of your interior.
You don't need to get rid of the decor at all; it's better to use it as point accents. That is, one or two photographs can be placed on one shelf, and a small vase with a bunch of dried flowers can be placed on the curbstone. It's the same story with literature - if you don't have a mini-library or a bookcase, make bright paper covers for them in the same style and put them on a shelf or windowsill.
