Many of those who still lived in the Soviet Union remember the apartment entrance doors, sheathed with leatherette or leather on one side. The covering was fastened on the sides with nails, but sometimes fasteners were also on the canvas. This was done more often when there was also filler under the upholstery.
Some did such manipulations from the outside of the door, others from the inside. In the second case, there was a problem with those owners who had a cat in the house. The animals loved to sharpen their claws on the door, and soon the skin turned into a torn rag. The action was carried out with upholstery everywhere, and only some apartments in the entrances remained in their original form. The rest had approximately the same appearance and color - dark blue or maroon.
What is the reason for the popularity, and the procedure itself? In fact, there were several of them.
First of all, it was fashionable at that time, but that's not all. From a practical point of view, leatherette made it possible to improve heat and sound insulation in the room.
As for fashion, the monotony of the release of door designs played a role here. The choice was very small. That is, the doors were produced the same everywhere. But Soviet citizens also wanted to bring individuality into their own homes, to make the door unique and universal. Of course, the phrase "design solution" was not used then, but the desire was present. Therefore, people got out of the situation as best they could. We used those materials that were freely available.
Some painted the doors, others used leatherette to give the doors a richer look. By the way, today you can also find doors upholstered in leather. The owners are guided by the same principle. People still think that it is so beautiful. But from the practical side of the issue today, there are many other options for making the front door reliable.

It should be noted that this coating was to some extent also a cover (we remember how TV remotes were exposed in covers, here it is the same). In the Soviet Union, people took care of everything and tried to use any thing longer. After all, changing the upholstery was much easier than the door itself.

With regard to insulation and sound insulation, no explanation is required. The doors were made quite thin, so they let the cold into the apartment and were not an obstacle to the sound made by residents or neighbors who climb the stairs to their floor. And in the hostels they even noticed that leatherette does not allow even unpleasant odors to penetrate into the room.
