How housewives in the Soviet Union cooked sausages without water: unusual adaptations of the past

Household appliances, appliances, all kinds of devices for everyday life and utensils for the kitchen that were produced and used in the Soviet Union - this is an inexhaustible topic. Some of the products have calmly survived the times and continue to serve well now, albeit in an improved, modified format. Some have remained in their original form and are gradually living out their time. And there are those that are no longer used and are completely forgotten.

If crepe makers, ice cream makers, electric BBQ makers for household use, produced in the USSR, can still be seen from time to time at some housewives, then the electric sausage maker is already a rarity. Among our contemporaries, even the word itself causes surprise and genuine interest. The fact that Soviet sausages differed in composition and taste from modern ones is not all. The industry of the USSR worked in different directions. One of them was the release of dietetic sausages.

The recipes for making dietary products were developed by professionals. A lot of time was devoted to the preparation of these dishes - it was necessary that the cooking process took a minimum of time and effort. In this regard, diet sausages, sausages and small sausages were very popular among the Soviet people. In order for the listed products in finished form to retain the maximum amount of taste and useful properties, it was important to pay attention to the technology of their preparation.

The non-contact electric sausage cooker for domestic use made it possible to cook these sausages much faster than in a saucepan. If you look at it, this speed is not needed, in principle. But the plus was that in the cooked sausages and sausages the taste, nutritional properties, aroma were preserved better than when boiling in a container with water. The fact is that during cooking on this device, moisture was completely retained in the product.

The device had a plastic case, similar in shape to a small box, equipped with a hinged hinged lid. Metal contact plates were installed inside, and on the sides there were special spikes, paired, where sausages or sausages were planted. There were also electric sausages with timers. They turned off automatically after the product reached its ready stage.

The process of preparing sausages with an electric appliance was very simple. The product itself was placed on the spikes, after which the lid was closed and the power turned on. There was also a very important function here, the so-called "protection from fools". The user could turn on the sausage maker only if the lid was closed. Sausages, as a unique conductor, passed a current through themselves, which led to their uniform heating, preservation of all moisture, nutrients, vitamins. It took one or two minutes to cook six sausages, no more.

The devices were considered especially convenient, even irreplaceable, for catering establishments. At home, the citizens of the Soviet Union used them much less often. These household appliances were manufactured in accordance with GOST 1956. According to the then existing standards, it worked from a 127 V network. But in the sixties, they began to gradually switch to another voltage - 220 V. Accordingly, household electric sausage cookers were left out of time and technological progress. Most likely, it is with this factor that thrifty owners have no devices, somewhere, in the far corner of the pantry. And today it is very difficult for us to imagine what kind of devices they were.

A similar situation is observed with respect to another household appliance that has not survived to this day - a hydraulic-type whisk of the SG-1 brand. The device was intended for home use. With its help, mousses, creams, eggnogs, meringues, sauces and so on were prepared at home.

The principle of the whisk was very simple - it functioned by connecting it to a water supply tap. The hostess saved a lot of her own time and effort. There was no need to turn the handle with your hands until exhaustion, regularly checking the degree of readiness of the consistency of egg whites, cream or other substance.

The knocker of this model had a glass body, which was located on a plastic base. In this base there was a special plastic turbine that made two special knives made of stainless steel work. The final element of the design was a measuring cup installed in the lid for two tablespoons and a regular rubber hose that was supplied to the water supply. After placing the necessary ingredients in the housing, this hose was connected to the device and the tap was opened. Under the influence of water, the turbine was started, and with it the entire mechanism.

Probably, many of us would like to take a look at these devices, unique and unusual for our time, or even better, test them in action.
