Why would a Soviet truck have such strange wheels, and what kind of "handle" stands on them.

If you look at the Soviet military and some civilian trucks, you will notice that some mysterious "handle" is moving away from the very center of the wheel. It is quite obvious that the protruding device performs some important function and, most likely, it has nothing to do with the convenience of manual transportation of the wheels. So why do we need a characteristic detail on Soviet wheels?

Have you ever seen military trucks of the Soviet Union? Probably had to. Then everyone had to somehow pay attention to a very strange detail on the rims of tractors. There is something like a "handle", which on occasion could be grasped. As a rule, it is not very well visible. Except when the discs are painted black and white especially for special occasions.

You can see the "handle" on the wheels of ZIL, URAL, KAMAZ and other domestic cars. As you could easily guess, this is not a pen at all, and not a detail for beauty. The protruding metal part on the wheel is a plug, a protective shield. You can even say that this is such a "hardcore" military nipple. Much more interesting is what is under this protective element.

And underneath is a hose for air supply, which in turn is part of the automatic wheel inflation system. As the name implies, this system is needed to maintain the desired pressure level in the wheels. This is very important not only for heavy military vehicles, but also for any other trucks and all-terrain vehicles that have to work in difficult conditions.

The automatic pumping system has two functions. Firstly, it can be used to save the wheel in the event of a minor breach. The system will supply air, helping to maintain the pressure at a more or less acceptable level at a crucial moment. Secondly, the wheel inflation system is constantly used to relieve pressure in the wheels when leaving on rough terrain and to build up pressure in the wheels when leaving the highway. The driver can do all these tricky operations right from the cab. Special indicators and switches help him in this important matter.
