Jesus' nut: what kind of part and why does a helicopter need it

A helicopter is an extremely complex machine. In order to fully understand its structure, it takes more than one year of painstaking study and practice. As with any other machine, the helicopter has a lot of very specific parts and mechanisms. For example, there is the so-called "Jesus nut". The name alone sounds intriguing. Obviously, this is something extremely important. So why is it needed and why is it given special attention to its verification?

Needless to say, there is a fairly large number of frankly strange gizmos in the helicopter, which are also responsible for very important things. Of course, all of them relate to the issues of aircraft performance and crew safety. The most striking example of such a thing can be considered the mysterious "Jesus Nut" or "Jesus nut". The name of the mysterious part was invented by American helicopter pilots during the Vietnam War.

The essence of the name can be explained very simply: "Jesus nut" is what the technique calls a "single point of failure." In other words, if this structural element breaks down, then the pilot can no longer do anything with the machine. Except to “pray to Jesus” to save him. Of course, the "Jesus Nut" is quite strong and reliable. Most often, it breaks down only on military vehicles, and even then only at those moments when the helicopter is subjected to massive shelling and numerous damage.

In the civil aviation segment, the number of helicopter crashes due to the breakdown of this element is very small. Such cases are literally collectible in history. Moreover, in the past two decades, helicopter designers have gone far ahead, and gradually abandon the use of the "Jesus Nut". Today it is found in either the cheapest or the oldest cars.

And if everything is more or less clear with the importance of the described structural element, then many probably still have one more question: what does “Jesus nut” do in a helicopter? Everything is extremely simple here. This nut secures the machine main rotor hub (which is large) to the gearbox. It is tightened by the efforts of several people at once, using a special calibration key. By the way, in the Soviet Union, the described structural element was called in a similar way - "the nut of life".
