Why did Soviet scouts tumble about and “bandage” machine guns before a mission?

A scout is a difficult and dangerous profession, especially during military operations. Therefore, in preparation for a mission or crossing the front line, it is vital to be careful and prepare thoroughly. But sometimes the scouts' rituals before starting work are as curious as their activities.

The most important reason why the preparation of the scout for the mission took place in relation to any little thing, was elimination of the danger of unmasking, because otherwise, oversight can cause disclosure and even death reconnaissance group. Therefore, they paid special attention to everything, even the smallest details.

First of all, it was necessary to properly prepare clothes and shoes. There were unspoken rules about the latter, although they could differ for individual units. So, if you had to go through arid, rocky terrain, then the best option was sandals or slippers with thick soles - they ensured inaudibility of movement.

In wetter weather, the scouts could be shod in boots, like cloth leggings or rubber stockings. But many scouts did not like boots at all: in a swamp they pull down and create a lot of noise, gaining water, and in dry land or while moving on all fours they are filled with sand.

This attention to detail continued during the preparation of the weapon. Basically, the scout's armament consisted of machine guns, a pair of anti-personnel grenades and one hundred rounds. And so that the weapon did not give away its owner, it also had to be masked.

So, for example, in the winter season, so that the dark barrel of the machine gun was not visible, it was tied with a bandage or gauze. And anti-personnel grenades tried not to put both in one pocket: when a Red Army soldier moved, they could make a ringing sound.

In matters of preventing sudden and unwanted noise, attention was paid to any, even the smallest details. So, before being sent to the front line, the scout had to wash, dry and lubricate his shoes so that they would not creak.

The equipment was also fitted - it should not hinder the movement of the soldier. Moreover, even matches were “soundproofed”: boxes with them were stuffed with bandage or cotton wool. And all metal objects were wrapped in matter.

That is why, before going on a mission, the scouts had to jump and even tumble on the ground - to hear extraneous noise when driving, find the source and eliminate it while there is a safe opportunity.

Interesting fact: GRU officers are also trained in several quiet movement skills. So, on the roofs, they move on all fours, because ordinary walking makes too much noise. And in apartments the scouts try to walk, pressing themselves against the wall - so the parquet does not creak underfoot.
