In some Soviet high-rise buildings you can see entrances with a through passage. Most often, these are found in series II-49 and P-46, as well as some others, less common. Most of these buildings were erected from 1965 to 1985. Why, in principle, was a through entrance needed in a Soviet house. A hundred years ago, such things were done in houses for servants, only Soviet citizens did not have any servants.
1. Save time
The first reason for the creation of such entrances is logistical. Very often, through entrances were made in very long houses, which would take a very long time to go around them in a circle. The two-aisle entrance gave pedestrians an exclusive opportunity to quickly get to the other side. For the same purposes, arches were made in many houses.
2. Unloading and loading
The second exit from the entrance was also often intended for loading and unloading bulky items. It was especially convenient when the tenants were moving. The presence of two exits made it possible not to create congestion at the entrance, which inevitably made life difficult for the rest of the residents.
3. For the janitor
The janitor is the most important person in a residential area, because it is he who keeps the streets in order and cleanliness. Entrances with through passages almost always had a "janitor's" room in some secluded corner - a place where a cleaner could keep his uniform, as well as equipment for working in the yard.

4. For bomb shelters
Houses with through entrances were built, among other things, next to bomb shelters and were supposed to facilitate the fastest flow of the human mass to safe places. Do not forget that the second half of the 20th century was marked by the Cold War, which more than once could escalate into the Third World War with the use of nuclear weapons.

5. Fire safety
Finally, the most important reason for the organization of through entrances is to increase fire safety. They were also made so that fire brigades could easily stretch hoses with water through houses, which were vital when extinguishing a fire. This can be done (as a last resort) through an apartment, but through an entrance with a through passage it is faster and easier.
