Not everyone has ever seen such strange small arms ammunition like those shown in the photograph. The thing is really exceptional rare. Including due to the fact that it has not received wide distribution. However, all this in no way makes it less interesting for consideration.
After World War II, gun shops from all over the world went wild and began experimenting with unprecedented persistence in creating a fundamentally new cartridge. In the early 1970s, the German arms company Heckler & Koch initiated another project, an attempt to create a promising weapon of tomorrow. Of course, the weapon of the future also required an unprecedented cartridge.
The ammunition shown in the photo with a strange configuration is a cartridge for the HK G11 assault rifle, which just appeared as part of the above-mentioned design initiative. Why is he exactly like that? Quite simply, the ammunition for the G11 is an attempt to create a caseless cartridge. It was assumed that a prismatic gunpowder box would be used instead of the traditional steel or brass cartridge case. It was covered not with paper, not with wood, or even with plastic, but with a special combustible varnish. The engineers assumed that this would be enough to ensure the survivability of the cartridge.

However, the Germans were wrong. Despite the fact that the idea turned out to be very interesting, the attempt to create a caseless ammunition for small arms was a failure. The fancy cartridge, even after several stages of improvement, remained extremely unreliable in the field. It is much more important that with enviable regularity it became the reason for the failure of the assault rifle itself. During combustion, the ammunition generated too much heat and produced a monstrous amount of soot, which was not the best effect on the weapon. As a result, the project was closed.
