How to replace an electrolytic capacitor correctly?

  • Dec 14, 2020

Electrolytic capacitors are very popular electronic elements, and although in 8 out of 10 cases they are recommended to be replaced with polymer ones, these products still remain the most in demand. The capacitor has a simple design and principle of operation, but replacing it requires certain skills and, more importantly, knowledge.

How to properly evaporate an electrolytic capacitor

A failed capacitor swells, but there are situations when its suitability cannot be determined eye "- it is necessary to measure the capacity using a special device or a multimeter with a wide range of functions. Both in case of replacement and in case of diagnostics, the capacitor must be evaporated.

How to properly evaporate an electrolytic capacitor:

  • Make sure no voltage is applied to the circuit.
  • We visually determine the place where the minus arrives at the capacitor, mark it.
  • Warm up the soldering iron well, dip it in rosin and take a little tin on the tip of the tip.
  • With gentle movements we solder the capacitor from its original place.

Important! Do not overdo it and hold the soldering iron tip for a long time at the point where the capacitor touches the board. You can just burn a wide hole and ruin the circuit. After that, replacing the capacitor will no longer help.

How to choose a new capacitor

If you follow the advice from the previous chapter, then the capacitor will be soldered out accurately and accurately, respectively, all its markings on the case will be preserved. From this information, only voltage is needed.

It is impossible to install an element with a lower voltage instead of a 16 V capacitor. Such a product will definitely fail, and most likely at the time it is applied to the power circuit. Therefore, it is best to solder the "native" capacitor, with the same voltage as the failed one.

The principle is exactly the same when selecting a capacitor by capacity. You can install a product with a larger capacity, with a smaller one - in no case! The larger this parameter, the better the smoothing, therefore either the nominal or the value is an order of magnitude higher.

What if you don't have the right capacitor at hand?

A capacitor similar to a burned-out capacitor is not always at hand, so you have to improvise. And if there is still enough space on the board, then it will not be a problem at all to get out of this situation.

1. If it is necessary to obtain a certain voltage, then several capacitors with a smaller potential difference are connected in series. The voltage will be higher, but the capacity will suffer.

2. To achieve good capacitance, a pair or more capacitors should be connected in parallel. This is not problematic, but only if there is enough space on the diagram.

Council. If the replacement of the electrolytic capacitor "does not burn", then it is best to evaporate the burnt element and go with it to the radio market, or order the product on the Internet. Then the new capacitor will definitely become a worthy replacement for the old one, and the circuit will serve the owner for many years to come.
