A properly selected fence for a garden bed carries not only a decorative function. It acts as a separator between the path and plantings, preventing weeds from entering. Its task is to restrain fertile soil, keeping the shape of the beds. That is why not every attractive option can be called truly practical.

1. From plastic elements

A plastic decorative fence will be an excellent solution for low beds. It installs quickly, is sold in most home improvement stores, and is fairly cheap. The plastic from which such fences are made is designed for prolonged heat and severe frosts. Over time, the fence will fade, but this process occurs evenly, so the changes will not be evident.

Thanks to the lateral attachments, the elements form a single enclosure that can withstand the pressure of a small layer of fertile soil. The strength of the structure is given by the stiffeners, which are located on the side of the garden.

The main disadvantage of plastic fencing is fragility. The fence can be easily broken by dropping a tool or hitting the wheel of a garden cart. Over the years, this disadvantage will progress.

2. From cement mortar

Perhaps not the most elegant, but very practical option would be fences made of reinforced concrete. Such fences are not afraid of the vagaries of the weather, withstand physical damage and are able to withstand the pressure of a thick layer of compacted soil. During work, you can always put the tool on them to lean on or sit down. The design even allows you to put a wide board over the bed, from which you can weed.

The main enemy of concrete fences is unstable walking soil. After spring floods, the structure may crack. In this case, the damage must be covered with fresh mortar to prevent further damage.

To prevent concrete fences from looking gray and dull, they can be sanded and painted. Some craftsmen even lay out patterns from glass or small tiles.

3. Wood-polymer composites

Fences made of wood-polymer composite will be not cheap, but very practical and attractive option. This material is great for creating garden beds. Due to its cellular structure, it is lightweight and retains the heat of the substrate for a long time. The pattern on the WPC practically does not fade over the years, maintaining a neat appearance for a long time.

Wood-polymer composite beds are too tough for most harmful rodents such as mice, rats and hamsters. They do not rot or deform when exposed to direct sunlight. Unlike wood, WPC fences do not require impregnation and regular painting. The structure is strong enough to support the weight of a thick layer of damp, compacted soil.

4. From polymer vine

Another artificial material from which you can make fences for beds is polymer vine. The braided walls are attached to the steel frame, forming a strong box that can withstand ground pressure. Unlike natural vine, the polymer material does not rot, is resistant to ultraviolet radiation and is not afraid of fungi. Artificial rods do not have knots, which means they do not cling to clothing during work.

Due to the mesh structure, the fences made of polymer vine perfectly let air and moisture through, which is very important for growing garden crops. While working, you can lean on a metal frame or put a board. The main disadvantage of such fences is their high cost.

5. From hollow plastic blocks

Despite the fact that this type of fencing, like many others, is made of plastic blocks, it has one major difference. The design has a built-in drip irrigation system. The hollow elements hold tens of liters of water, which evenly moisturizes the fertile soil. The tanks are filled through the black rubber plugs that are located at the top of each element.

As is the case with all similar modular designs, the blocks allow you to assemble fences of any shape and size.
