Usually, two, and less often three, supports are cut out of one plastic bottle. However, this is a rather wasteful approach. In this article, I want to talk about how to fully use a five-liter container by making four supporting structures out of it at once.
Option number 1
First, we need to cut off the neck of the bottle. This can be done with scissors or a regular serrated table knife. Since the plastic in this place is quite thick, you can use a saw for metal.
Next, we cut off the entire tapering part of the bottle as shown in the figure below. The height of this element should be enough to support almost any strawberry bush.
After the tapered part is cut off, the hole for the bush must be widened. The size is selected depending on the outlet of the plant and may differ from what is shown in the picture.
The final step will be to create petals and a cut to install the support. Remember to cut off the sharp edges, otherwise the wind and gravity can scratch the branches severely.
Option number 2
The second option would be supports from the middle of the bottle. Two such support devices can be obtained from one container.
The design is simple enough. Cut off one fourth of the bottle, then cut the petals on one of the edges. In order for the support to be installed without damaging the bush, it must be cut so that a curling ribbon is obtained.
For air circulation in the walls of the support, you can make a couple of dozen small holes. This is especially true for dense bushes with a massive rosette.
Option number 3
We only have the bottom of the bottle. We will make one more support out of it. This will be our last - fourth construction.
Since the plastic in this part of the bottle is quite thick, it will be easiest to make a cutout with a serrated knife, resting on the edge of the table. As in the case of the first option, the hole diameter is selected for each specific bush.
This design also assumes the presence of petals, but in this case they are bent inside the support. Since cutting off sharp edges inside the element is inconvenient, they can be melted with a lighter.
Since this design seriously disrupts air exchange, several dozen holes must be made in it. Otherwise, condensation will form on the walls.
We ended up with quite different, but practical and affordable supports that perfectly fulfill their function. The whole process from searching for containers to installing structures took no more than 20 minutes.
Supports in the garden
The picture above shows the installed supports from the middle of the bottle. They take the least time to create, but they turn out to be rather flimsy.
The picture above shows the supports from the top and bottom of the bottle. Plastic in these places is cut rather poorly, but this inconvenience is compensated by the strength of the structures.
