Despite the fact that the majority of my beds have boards made of tightly knit boards, weed problems do not diminish. Uninvited plants climb from all cracks, completely without feeling any obstacles. Regular weeding and shallow digging, which can be allowed in a crop garden, solve the problem in a very short time. The effectiveness of such work often tends to zero.
What is one wheatgrass, which sprouts after digging and loosening, even in mid-September.
I used to fight difficult weeds like wheatgrass by deep digging with two bayonets of a shovel. The procedure was long and difficult, but it was highly effective. A couple of years ago, I even described it in one of my articles. However, this method was only suitable for open areas. It was impossible to carry out the procedure in a high-bed box. It was necessary to look for another solution. And I did it.
The secret of the vitality of most weeds lies in a well-developed root system, which regenerates the plant even after the green part is completely removed. The solution to the problem suggests itself, but not everything is so simple. Many roots go deep into the ground, and in the case of high beds, they are also hammered into the cracks between the boards. It is almost impossible to remove them manually without the use of chemicals. And I didn't want to use the latter on my site.
I decided to act according to the proverb "They knock out a wedge with a wedge." If the root system cannot be removed, then it must be suppressed with a different root system. Rye could have helped me with this. This aggressive green manure has a powerful root system and drives out even the most tenacious rivals from its territory.
The essence of the method is as follows. In the fall, after removing the main crops, it is necessary to sow a strip of rye around the perimeter of the garden. Siderat will displace perennial weeds, depleting their root systems.
Before planting cultivated plants, rye is embedded in the soil in the same way as any other green manure. The result is a double benefit. On the one hand, we get rid of weeds, and on the other, we fertilize the soil.
Of course, you can sow the entire garden with rye, but in this case it will be much more difficult to dig the soil. If the main goal is to get rid of weeds, one perimeter will be sufficient.
