The consequences of laying the film under the paving slabs. Bitter experience and advice

About a year ago, I happened to become an unwitting witness to a dispute between my friend and the head of a construction team. The foreman begged my friend to buy geotextiles and spoke unflatteringly about the film.

But a friend complained about the high cost of the material and instructed the builders to lay what they had under the tiles. Roofing material, polyethylene film, pieces of vapor barrier and even a membrane for the roof were used. The builder only sighed heavily, but did not go against the customer. True, he warned that he would not be responsible for the consequences.

Of course everything looked very beautiful

A week later, in the yard of my friend there was paving slabs on 230 squares of the site. I will say that the builders did everything "according to the mind":

  • 1. First they put a small pillow of sand and dropout.
  • 2. The available materials were carefully rolled out from above.
  • 3. Then they covered them with a 5 cm layer of sand and leveled.
  • 4. The base was thoroughly tamped with a vibrating plate.
  • 5. At the end, tiles were laid on the prepared surface.

And everything seems to be fine, except that unsuitable materials were used for the substrate instead of high-quality geotextiles. Everything that is "lying around" in a friend's shed does not have a culvert capacity.

For the work, a friend laid out a tidy sum - 76 thousand rubles. He was satisfied with the work of the builders and enjoyed the new tiles. But the joy did not last long, until the first heavy rain.

Although the tiles were installed under a slight slope and there are drainage systems, the basement was flooded thoroughly.

This is what the basement looked like after a month of prolonged rains

And the reason lies in the mistakes made by both the builders and the customer:

  • 1. The materials that went in the course were not drainage. The water that falls on them is not absorbed into the ground, but looks for the easiest ways to exit. As a result, it seeps through the overlaps and flows out over the edges.

Water stagnation forms on the tiles. And he will leave only when the water spreads over the film in different directions and is absorbed into the sand.

  • 2. When laying tiles, it is necessary to make a slope also of roll materials. The builders missed this moment. Surely, they laid the film with a counter-bias. As a result, we have a flood in the basement and my friend's indignation.

What did I want to say with this article? At first, do not repeat my friend's mistakes. Each material has its own direct purpose. If you have something left somewhere and is lying around, there is no need to try to shove it into inappropriate places. Maybe at first you will save money, but over time you will regret it, since you will have to spend many times more on the rework.

When planning to lay tiles, do not skimp on geotextiles. It will not interfere with the drainage of water into the ground over the entire area.
