When we think about kitchen planning in long evenings, we usually only care about the aesthetic side of the issue. However, convenience and elementary safety are much more important.
That is why the purchase of a new kitchen unit must be approached thoroughly, and it is best to start with measurements.
How to choose the best kitchen set?
Competent measurement of the kitchen
We measure the kitchen
Before deciding what size kitchen furniture to buy, you need to measure the available space. You want your new headset to fit perfectly, right? Then let's get started.
To do this, you will need to draw up a schematic drawing plan with your own hands, on which you will note the following:
- Distance from floor to ceiling;
- Distance between opposite walls;
- It is also necessary to indicate on the plan door and window openings: the distance from them to the floor, ceiling and walls (while not forget about the extra space required to open doors and windows and which direction they are open);
- Then indicate all the other protruding elements of the kitchen (heating systems, pipes, switches, sockets, etc.).
The location of switches, outlets, electrical and water outlets deserves special attention. It is better if you think in advance where all this will be located before buying new furniture.
Why is this needed? The location of the items listed above may not fit into your chosen kitchen set configuration.
And to prevent this from happening, here are the instructions that should be followed:
- Place sockets for a dishwasher, stove, refrigerator and other stationary household appliances no higher than 1.2 m of the floor;
- In addition, it is better to set aside for household appliances;
- If you want to place several outlets between the wall cabinets and the worktop (that is, in the apron area), then mark them in the figure, at a level of 90-92 cm from the floor. In this case, any standard kitchen set will perfectly fit into the proposed conditions.
We recommend that you carefully study this figure.
By making a plan like this, you can decide exactly what type of headset you need.
Sizes of kitchen sets
Very rational use of kitchen space
To make it easier for you (kitchen planning), let's figure out the dimensions of kitchen sets.
There are two main options here:
- Standard sizes;
- Atypical dimensions (or multi-level furniture).
Standard headsets
Standard size set with flat worktops
As a rule, the main functional load is taken by the lower kitchen cabinets, so let's start with them. What can be the height of the lower modules (meaning the height from the floor to the top plane of the table top)?
After all, it is this size that will first of all be of interest to furniture assemblers from whom you plan to order a set. Therefore, you need to know what to choose from.
At one time, the Institute of Aesthetics (VNIITE) proposed a standard height for all kitchen work surfaces - 85 centimeters. And this figure was not chosen by chance: it is this size of wardrobes that is the most convenient and optimal for most European women. In addition, this height corresponds to the dimensions of a typical household appliance.
However, with the last change in the state standard, the All-Russian Design and Technological Institute of Furniture introduced another permissible height - 90 centimeters. And some European furniture manufacturers consider the most comfortable height 85 or 95 cm.
In recent years, the parameters of a person have practically not changed, which means that the norms and rules set forth in the standards must be observed by designers of kitchen furniture.
Advice! When installing the headset, leave a gap of about 1 cm between the lower modules and the wall. This is necessary for ventilation of the furniture itself and good heat transfer when using a microwave oven, refrigerator, oven and other equipment built into floor cabinets.
As for the standard sizes of wall cabinets, they can be as follows: height - 36, 72 or 92 centimeters, depth (excluding the facade) - 30 centimeters. Deviations from these parameters are permissible, but then the price for a custom-made kitchen set will increase.

Typefaces of atypical sizes
Multilevel kitchen
According to many professional designers, it is a big mistake to plan a kitchen in which all work surfaces are at the same height. Multilevel heights of the work table, stove and sink in the context of one headset make cooking much easier, since the hostess can change the position of the back. Thus, the load is distributed evenly.
Therefore, in terms of ergonomics, there are three levels of wellness:
- A high surface level is ideal for washing and cutting areas. In this case, when washing dishes and cutting food, you do not have to bend over the sink or countertop. A high level will serve as additional support for the arms bent at the elbows, which will reduce the load on the spine and legs.
- For more difficult tasks requiring physical effort (kneading and rolling dough, chopping cabbage, etc.), the height of the working surface should be even higher. After all, the upper arm muscles and the back muscles are involved here.
- But it is better to lower the cooking zone - when you remove or put a heavy pan on the stove, it is much more convenient and also safer to keep it lower.
Thus, it is possible to designate the average heights: for the work surface - 90 cm, for the sink - 100 cm, and for the stove - 80 cm.
Multilevel work surfaces
The height of the lower kitchen units can be artificially increased, for example by taller legs or order a multi-level set, providing and coordinating with the furniture manufacturer individual options.
The configuration and combination of wall cabinets of the headset can be absolutely any. Non-standard options include corner, horizontal and vertical top modules with different depths, heights, shelf types and opening methods.
Various options for wall cabinets and their combinations will help to make the kitchen set truly functional and unique. Confirmation of this is the photo below.
Despite the variety of choices, there is such a thing as habit. Someone likes a multi-level kitchen, but someone thinks that a kitchen set, completed under a single worktop, is more familiar, and therefore more convenient. Therefore, you need to choose based on your preferences.
Note! If you have accepted to complete the kitchen under a single countertop, and at the same time the growth of each member of your family is significant differs from each other, then the height of the headset is selected for the one who spends the most time on kitchen. Usually, this is the mistress of the house.
Tips for planning a kitchen space
- When choosing a location for kitchen furniture, it is necessary to rely not only on the harmony of colors and textures (see also the article on the arrangement of furniture in the kitchen). When ordering this or that headset, think carefully: will it be convenient for you to bend over to the lower modules or reach for the upper cabinets? Is there enough space in the aisle for this? Do not forget about the doors of cabinets and household appliances - suddenly you need to walk through the kitchen when they are open, or open neighboring doors at the same time.
This is the optimal distance to remain in the aisle for comfortable use of household appliances and cabinets.
- As mentioned above, the size of kitchen furniture plays a significant role in creating a comfortable work in the kitchen. For example, a uniform height of the working surfaces will create a continuous working front, without protrusions and gaps. This will allow you to easily move dishes and dishes from the work surface to the hob and vice versa. But if you take care of your health, then the best option is a multi-level headset.
- It is also important at what height the shelves and drawers will be:
Where does "comfortable" end and "not visible" begin?
- Very low - 40 cm of floor. Perhaps the most inconvenient location, so poorly visible. Best for storing things you rarely use and heavy kitchen utensils.
- Low - from 40 to 75 cm. It is good to store small appliances or large kitchen utensils at this height. But nevertheless, it is very inconvenient to constantly look down, therefore those things that involve their frequent use should be in front of your eyes.
- The average height is from 75 to 190 cm. All equipment will be perfectly visible in this area, so it is ideal for storing frequently used kitchen utensils (dishes, cutlery, spices, etc.).
- High - from 190 cm. Here you can plan an additional row of shelves, but only if there is a strong need. To reach the desired item from such a height, you will have to substitute a chair or a ladder every time. If this does not scare you, then it would be most rational to put light, unbreakable objects on high shelves.
Shelf height
- The correct placement of wall cabinets is one that takes into account the height of the person who spends the most time in the kitchen. For example, for a woman whose height is 170 cm, the best distance is 45 cm from the work surface to the bottom of the wall cabinets. If it is less, then filling the cones cannot be avoided.
Ideal distance between cabinets and work surface
- The most effective location of the hood is 75-80 cm from a gas stove or 65-75 cm from an electric one.
Look at the distance between the cooker and the hood
- The stove should be placed aside from the aisle, so as not to accidentally burn yourself on hot pans and pots. Also, keep a distance of at least 45 cm from the cooking zone to the window. Otherwise, there is a risk of blowing out fire or burning curtains.
- It is necessary to maintain a distance of at least 40 cm between the sink and the stove - so splashes from water will not be able to extinguish the fire. The free space will harmoniously complement the countertop.
Finally
Kitchen planning is a daunting task. After all, it is very important here to correctly combine the aesthetic and practical aspects of the issue. Equally important is how much money you are willing to spend on buying new furniture. 40, 70 thousand rubles or more?
Be sure to discuss with all family members the problem of arranging the kitchen and come to a common solution. Then, visit a few furniture outlets, taking your sketch plan with you. This is the only way you can make rational choices.
