Kitchen hoods are in great demand these days. Many housewives appreciated their effectiveness, because the occurrence of fumes and burning that accompany the cooking process are very undesirable factors. Modern hoods are able to effectively deal with all kinds of odors, purifying the air, or even taking it outside or into the ventilation shaft.

No matter how efficient and high-quality the hood is in operation, sooner or later it may fail. In this case, you have only two options: go to the workshop or do the repair yourself.
And since the hood mechanism is not particularly complicated, the second option will be quite rational even if you have never repaired electrical appliances before. In addition, the high cost of professional repairs is another reason to do such work yourself.
Hood types and device
There are two main types of hoods: filter and exhaust.
Let's consider each of them in more detail.
- Filtering. Also called hanging hoods. Due to the specifics of the device, they are the most affordable option. They are distinguished by their simplicity and attractive design. Such hoods do not remove air outside the room, but only filter it, returning it to the kitchen again. They use the principle of recirculation.
Whether this type of hood is acceptable or not is up to you, because in some cases this is the only option. In addition, such designs are easy to install and do not require professional intervention.

- Diverting kitchen hoods. They are more perfect, since they remove air outside the room. However, they require a ventilation shaft or exit to the street. Such hoods are somewhat more expensive than filtering hoods, but they differ little from them in design. So, instead of additional filters, there is an opening for air outlet.
Most modern hoods can operate in two modes. That is, filter the air if there is no ventilation system and take it out of the room if there is an outlet.

How the hood works
How modern hoods work.
Modern kitchen hoods are arranged as follows. When the mechanism is put into operation, the rotating impeller begins to draw air through the openings of the casing, into which a synthetic or paper grease filter is implanted.
The extraction hood simply draws the air out. The filtering structures also have an additional carbon filter designed to remove odors from the air.
Many modern hoods are multi-speed, which indicates the presence of a special switch.
The first thing to pay attention to when using the hood continuously is the grease filter. If it is not replaced in time, the efficiency of the hood will dramatically decrease.
The frequency of filter change should be determined based on the efficiency of the hood use. On average, it should be changed every three months. Carbon filters in a filtering hood can operate from six months to 2 years (see. article Choosing a filter for a kitchen hood).
Hood malfunctions
Since the mechanism of a modern hood is quite simple, there are a small number of faults that are quite simple to fix. Instructions for their detection and destruction are based on the following undesirable factors.
Odors in the kitchen
- According to the instructions, any hood should be turned on before the immediate start of cooking, and turned off after 15 minutes after the end. In this case, there should be no smell. If you did not replace the filter elements in time, the hood will be unable to remove grease and odors from the air.
- Ineffective charcoal filter. In order to get to it, you need to remove the air intake grille.

Remove the filter cover as shown in the photo and replace the carbon granules. If the filter is non-separable, simply replace it with a new one.
3. In order to replace the grease filter, you need to remove the grill and place it facing downwards. Next, carefully disconnect the old filter and wash the grill, after which you should put a new filter on it.

Stove lighting does not work
1. Burnt out light bulb. In the event that the fan continues to run and there is no lighting, just replace the bulb.
2. Defective switch. If replacing the lamp does not fix the problem, then you should check the light switch. In most cases, the problem is that one of the switch wires is simply “coming off”.
The hood does not turn on
1. There is no power supply. Check that the hood plug fits snugly into the socket. You should also check the voltage at the outlet itself. If it is not there, check the shield, perhaps the fuses have blown or the machine has turned off.
2. The switch is defective. Check the switch with a tester. If it does not ring, then it should be replaced.
3. The power plug is defective. Check the plug.
4. A fuse in the plug or in the connecting device has blown. If the plug has a built-in fuse, the problem may be with the fuse. Check it and replace if necessary.
5. Internal wiring malfunction. Using a tester, check the internal wiring in order to exclude the presence of internal damage. Loose contact connections should be removed by tightening the screws and crimping the terminals with pliers.
7. Malfunction of the electric motor. Check the engine. If it is defective, it must be replaced with the same one.

Advice! In most cases, replacing an electric motor is purely economically unprofitable. In terms of cost, such a purchase can be akin to purchasing a new hood. Therefore, it is better to stop at the repair.
