Good afternoon, my reader. For some, winter drags on unbearably long. It seems that there is no end to it. Gray frosty days are woven in a monotonous succession, especially for summer residents who have to while away them in their city apartments. Many of them are looking forward to spring in order to devote themselves to their favorite kindergarten, but especially impatient (or simply taught by experience) find themselves work in it in winter, in its last weeks. This is exactly the time that you can devote to preparing the garden for the spring, carrying out a number of activities in it.

1. Conduct an audit of garden plants
First of all, it is necessary to inspect them for damage that they could have received in winter during frosts, freezing rains or heavy snowfalls. Knowing which plants are affected makes it easier to plan for restorative care for them when spring comes. It is even advisable to make a list of such works. And something can be fixed right away, for example, by placing a support under the broken branch.
2. Clear the area from debris
You can remove broken branches, grab debris and last year's foliage (if there is no more snow on the soil), remove from plants last year's dried fruits, if they still remain on the branches, as well as pest nests - they are better burn immediately.
3. Whitewash trees
In late winter and early spring, unexpected frosts are still possible. Sharp temperature drops are harmful to fruit plants. To protect their bark from frost, it is advisable to whiten it.
4. Take measures to protect plants from rodents
At the end of winter, pests are especially hungry, and tree bark is almost their only food. If the garden is not reliably protected from mice and hares, you should check and, if necessary, fix the harness on the boles, and compact the snow around the trees.
5. Mulch the trunk circles
Since frosts are still possible at the end of winter and at the initial spring stage, it is better to insure yourself and insulate the trees. The mulch will help keep you warm.
6. Do table vaccination
February is the time to get the cuttings and rootstocks prepared in the fall to start the grafting procedure.
7. Purchase planting material
You should not postpone a visit to the nursery for seedlings, seeds and bulbs, because closer to planting time, due to demand, there may not be much there.
8. Check your garden tools
The gardener, like a soldier before the battle, must meet spring fully armed. It is imperative to check the availability of tools and their serviceability. Some of them can be sharpened, repaired. Perhaps something will be required and bribed.
9. Repair garden structures and structures
If you do this at the end of winter, then you will not have to waste precious time on them later, when the time comes for intensive gardening work.
10. Install a container to collect rainwater
Rainwater and melt water are especially beneficial for plants when irrigated. If there is an opportunity to collect it, it would be a waste of time to miss that chance. Check that the bottom of the barrel or other container adapted for this purpose has not rotted during the winter, and place it under the downpipe.
11. Prepare a place for compost
Don't put off organizing a place for a compost heap. Last year's foliage, dry branches, mulch, plundered during the cleaning of the garden, are already asking to take a place in it.
12. Fertilize the soil
After the snow cover melts and the ground thaws, you can start applying all types of fertilizers. After winter, plants need to get as much nutrients as possible, because in the spring they need to gain a lot of strength for active growth.
13. Make a planting plan
Experienced gardeners make it in the fall. But something could have changed over the winter. For example, there was a desire to organize a hedge somewhere or to transplant some bushes. Therefore, it will not be superfluous to once again inspect the garden and figure out where and what plants to plant.
