How to choose the right time
The best time for grafting is winter, especially if it is done in the root indoors, in summer it is best to propagate with a green cuttings taken from a tree. The best option is the beginning of spring, when the buds begin to swell, but it is important to remember that the grafting must be done before the movement begins along the tree trunk. For the scion, you can use cuttings that were harvested in the fall.
Instructions
It is easy to inoculate in the side cut:
- First of all, you need to choose a healthy stalk, which has 2-3 healthy kidneys.
- Make an oblique cut at the bottom.
- On the reverse side, you need to make another cut of the same length.
- Cut the top of the cutting 1 cm, slightly higher than the second bud.
- Make an incision on the side of the rootstock. The knife must be positioned at a certain angle, it should not exceed 30 degrees. It is necessary to cut not only the bark, but also the wood.
- The stalk must be inserted into the cut, while maximally combining the cambial layers of the scion and rootstock on one side.
- The vaccination site is often wrapped with duct tape or foil.
- The top of the grafted cuttings are recommended to be lubricated with garden varnish.
If you make a graft in the side cut, then you can change the direction of growth of the branch and further control the formation of the crown of the tree. To this end, you can change the incision in the rootstock, and unfold the scion so that one of the buds looks in the right direction.

It will take two months for the scion to grow together with the stock. But with the correct implementation of the vaccination, the result can be observed after 3 weeks. If the buds begin to wake up, then the branch has taken root, then it remains after 5 weeks to remove the binding. It happens that shoots begin to sprout at the vaccination site or near it, in which case they need to be thinned out. It is impossible to remove all the shoots, because they act as protection from the wind.
