Good afternoon, my reader. A common problem that is faced when growing lilacs is the emergence of root growth. Fighting this ailment is not within the power of every gardener, but there is a way to get rid of root growth once and for all. Let's consider it in detail.

Why does growth arise
Root shoots are formed for a reason, and before starting a struggle, you need to understand the reasons for its appearance. If you have created all the conditions for the comfortable life of the plant, the risk of overgrowth is extremely low, usually it's all about care errors:
- Lack of moisture. If you do not provide the lilac bush with regular watering, its roots will move closer to the surface of the earth, where precipitation falls. This deformation of the root system provokes the emergence of shoots.
- Excessive pruning. Even moderate pruning causes significant damage to the plant, and if you overdo it with the removal of branches, the bush will release young shoots and undergo tremendous stress.
- Damage to lilacs: sunburn and wounds, cuts after pruning are a common cause of overgrowth.
- Lilacs with bare roots and various diseases can also be susceptible to overgrowth.
Before getting rid of the overgrowth, you need to solve the problems that cause its formation. If this is not done, after a while this problem will return, and the fight against it will continue for a long time.
Will chemistry help?
Chemicals are the most effective way to fight plant diseases, and these drugs will quickly cope with the growth. A significant disadvantage of this method is that herbicides harm crops growing nearby. Precipitation, washing away the agent, carries it across the entire territory of the site with groundwater, and chemical agents negatively affect the planting. Thus, it is undesirable to use herbicides in the fight against overgrowth.
Will manual overgrowth removal be effective?
It makes no sense to remove young shoots: their appearance will not stop as long as the root system is laid in the soil. Removing shoots by hand (digging up the roots and sifting the soil) will be appropriate if the lilac bush has already been cut down, and the shoots are still appearing.
If you want to get rid of the overgrowth and at the same time preserve the shrub, we do not recommend resorting to mechanical removal of young shoots. A lot of time and effort is spent on this ineffective process, and there will be no sense from it, since the growth will appear again.
The best way to get rid of the problem
If the cause of the appearance of the overgrowth is not identified, you can resort to the universal and most effective method, thanks to which unwanted shoots will be removed and will not reappear.
To do this, a plot for lilacs with a radius of 80-120 cm is outlined, and a ditch about 40 cm deep is dug along its edges, at this distance the roots of the plant lie. A protective metal shield is installed in the dug hole, using metal pegs as fasteners. After securing the structure, bury the ditch. This method prevents root overgrowth, so the growth will no longer appear.
