Basic rules for growing a large crop of tomatoes, not foliage

  • Mar 03, 2021

Good afternoon, my reader. Hardly any of the summer residents grow tomatoes for the sake of their green bushes. Everyone wants to harvest rich crops. Oddly enough, the more plant mass, the fewer tomatoes there are on the bush. We will tell you how to get plants to put all their growth power into fruits, and not into foliage.

Here are the steps to take:

  1. When preparing your greenhouse for tomatoes, do not apply a lot of organic fertilizer to the ground. The plant will use their excess for the growth of leaves and stepchildren.
  2. After the tomato has been planted, do not water it for a couple of weeks. The moisture that was given to him during planting will be enough for this time. The bush should take root downward and not into the upper layers of the earth. Shallow roots will make the crop less resistant to disease.

  4. In general, tomatoes love rare (once a week), but abundant watering. But still, watch out and do not allow the earth to dry out, otherwise the plant may lose color. This is especially true on hot days. You can determine the condition of the soil by making a depression of 15 cm. And if the ground there has already dried up, then boldly water it.
  5. Limit, or even better, eliminate nitrogen fertilization altogether after planting tomatoes. These drugs cause the growth of the green mass, and not the fruit.
  6. During the flowering of the second or third brush, the tomato should be sprayed with a weak solution of boric acid (10 g per 10 l of water). This will increase the sugar level in the fruit and enhance the fruiting of the bush.
  7. Reduce stress by cutting back on watering. In this case, the plant will devote all its strength to the continuation of the genus, namely to the formation of fruits. After the ovaries have formed, this situation is unacceptable.
  8. Remove stepsons in time. Form the bushes into one or two trunks. For some varieties, it is permissible to leave three stems. In greenhouses, pinching is carried out every 8-10 days, and in the open field once.
  9. You should also periodically remove the foliage from the bushes, this is especially true during fruiting. The lower leaves lying on the ground can generally cause tomato disease. But do it with care on tomatoes in the open field, because on the street foliage protects fruits from the cold and scorching sun.
  10. Sometimes tomatoes, mostly tall, begin to fatten and grow a long brush. It should be pruned, leaving 7-8 tied berries.
  11. If you want the fruits to form well and grow large, then leave no more than six brushes on one trunk.
  12. The first root dressing is carried out after the formation of the brushes. For this, potash, phosphorus, magnesium fertilizers are used. The lack of trace elements and magnesium is compensated by spraying foliage with these preparations. Also dust the ground after watering with ash.
  13. Spud tomatoes, this procedure increases root formation. And this, in turn, gives strength for the formation of a large number of high-quality, large fruits.
  14. Pinch the tomato growth point in time. This is done at the end of July-August, it all depends on your region. Then the tomato will use all its strength to build up the mass of fruits.
