In order for the flower to delight the owner as long as possible, it is necessary to choose the right plant. When buying, it is important to assess the condition of the root system. If the roots of the orchid are dry, most likely the plant itself will soon lose its attractive appearance. It is better to refuse to buy such a flower.

If problems with the root system have arisen in orchids that have lived near you for a long time, then you should find out the reasons and try to help the plants.

Dry roots - what is the reason?

You can often face a situation where the roots of the flower begin to spread outside the planter. At the same time, they dry and die off. It is worth remembering that in natural conditions, orchids grow in tropical rainforests on tree trunks and absorb moisture from the air using their roots. The reason for the changes in the root system is the air humidity uncomfortable for the plant.

What should a florist do?

If the orchid is active grows roots, so that they begin to get out of the pot, this indicates insufficient moisture. The plant tries to make up for the lack of moisture by increasing the area of the root system.

The roots can grow quite long. This is a natural process of plant adaptation to environmental conditions. If the roots are alive and green, then they should not be pruned.

It is enough to transplant the plant into a larger planter and provide a suitable air humidity for the flower. Do not forget about the free flow of air to the roots! Get a special orchid pot or make holes all over the surface of a regular planter. Do not ignore the situation, otherwise the orchid risks losing its luxurious flowers or completely dry out and die.

The situation is completely different if the roots of the flower dry and die off.

There are usually two reasons for the drying out of the root system of orchids:

  1. Insufficient moisture - the plant gets rid of the roots to conserve moisture.
  2. Excessive moisture - the flower reduces the area of moisture absorption by dying off excess roots.

First of all, you should analyze how the plant is watered and make the necessary adjustments.

Remember, you cannot fill the orchid! The plant should be watered about once a week. Avoid waterlogging the roots and substrate. Watch the plant: if there is not enough moisture, the roots of the orchid become covered with a white bloom.

Another watering method is to immerse the plant pot in a container of water for 15-25 minutes. Use warm, settled water. To reduce hardness, the water can be boiled. It is recommended to carry out such a procedure no more than once a month. Spray roots and woody substrate between waterings.

It is especially important to moisturize the plants during the heating season. Hot batteries, heaters and convectors mercilessly dry up the air. Humidifiers can be used to create a comfortable moisture level for plants. There are inexpensive, portable network-powered models on the market. You can place dishes with water next to the flowers. By evaporating, the moisture will nourish the plant roots.

Dried roots must be pruned. It is recommended to disinfect the knife and sprinkle the cut with crushed activated carbon.

Be attentive to plants, and they can delight you with their beauty for many years.
