When to start planting raspberries

The suitable time for planting raspberries differs depending on the region in which the owner of the garden lives.

  • Residents of the southern regions, where hot weather lasts for weeks, and autumn comes late, it is recommended to start planting raspberries in October. Shrub shoots planted in autumn will have time to grow roots and begin active growth immediately with the onset of the warm season. The gardener will be able to enjoy the first harvest of raspberries in the same year.

  • Spring is suitable for planting raspberries in the northern regions. The inconsistent autumn weather will have a bad effect on the condition of young shoots, many of them may weaken or die. But shrubs planted in early spring will be able to avoid trouble and have time to get stronger before the buds awaken.
  • The residents of the middle lane have a wide choice. Representatives of frost-resistant raspberry varieties can be planted here in September or October - it is only important to make sure that there is enough time (at least three weeks) before the first frost.
Shoots of more whimsical varieties are recommended to be planted in spring.

You can plant raspberries in the summer. If the planting of a crop is carried out at its end, it is necessary to prevent the flowering of the shrub - the formation of buds can stop the growth of the plant's roots.

How to choose a landing site

When choosing a site where the raspberry tree will be located, you can be guided by the criteria described below:

  • The right combination of light and shadow. Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight has a bad effect on the shoots of many raspberry varieties, therefore, when choosing a place, it is worth making sure that an lung falls on the site from 12 to 16 hours shadow. You should also not choose a site that is constantly in the shade - a lack of light will cause a curvature of the trunk of the shrub, which will lead to a decrease in its yield.
  • The landing area must not be flooded. A small elevation is ideal.
  • The soil can be anything, but raspberries still prefer to grow on black earth soils and loams.
  • The landing site must be protected from wind and draft. It is recommended to plant a shrub at a distance of 2-3 meters from a fence or wall of any structure - this will protect the plant from the elements.

Planting methods

Belt method

The tape method of planting raspberries is suitable for owners of large areas. The features of this planting method are described below.

  • Seedlings are placed sequentially in a trench with a depth of 0.3-0.5 meters.
  • Landing ditches should extend from north to south.
  • The distance between the rows can be from 1.5 to 2 meters, and the gaps between the plants should be up to 0.5–0.7 meters. The width of the trench itself should be approximately equal to a meter.

Bush method

The planting holes located at random (but at distances of at least one meter from each other) are usually prepared a month before the procedure. The wells should be filled with humus or a special soil mixture containing useful fertilizers. The shoots in the pits should be free, when planting, make sure that their roots are not bent.

Shoot planting

Branching shrubs can give life to new plants - it is enough to separate the extra shoots and use them to increase the area of the raspberry tree. The planting process in this way is described below.

  • It is necessary to prepare future raspberry bushes - sprouts 1 centimeter thick and about 0.3-0.4 meters long will do.
  • Dig up the selected shoots, cut off their rhizomes.
  • Cut off the top of the shoots. The final height of the seedlings should be about 0.2 meters.
  • Clean the lower part of the stem from leaves and small twigs.
  • Place the shoot in the planting pit and irrigate.

Planting by cuttings

The procedure takes longer than the planting operations described earlier. To plant raspberries by cuttings, you must follow the steps described below.

  • Prepare cuttings - cut the upper kidney of a developed healthy stem, divide it with an oblique cut into two parts.
  • Leave the shoots soaked in a mixture of water and a rooting agent for a day.
  • Plant the cuttings in a mixture of sand and peat, taken in a 1: 2 ratio, cover the plants with a transparent cap.
  • The protection can be removed after 3-4 weeks after planting - by this time the shrubs grow stronger and develop a sufficiently powerful root system.

The seedlings can be placed directly in the air or placed in a greenhouse. When transplanting greenhouse plants into open ground, the soil must be mulched.

Planting seeds

The most difficult to care for are the sprouts obtained by planting seeds. It is worth mentioning that seed-grown shoots can be disappointing with yields - they may not necessarily be as good as those of the mother shrub.

The seeds can be purchased at the store or prepared on their own - for this you need the largest and healthiest berries. Seeds are planted in the ground with the onset of spring. Detailed instructions for the landing method are set out below.

  • Raspberry seeds are mixed with sand in a ratio of 1: 5, the resulting composition is placed in bags made of nylon or gauze. The latter are lowered into a box filled with moss and stored in a cold room for 3–6 months. The air temperature in the room should be 2-3 ° С.
  • With the onset of spring, the seeds are placed in a container filled with an equal amount of sand and peat to a depth of 0.5 centimeters.
  • The container, covered with a transparent film, is placed in a well-lit place. Care should be taken that the seedlings are not exposed to direct sunlight - this can lead to the death of plants.
  • Once a week, the protection is raised, the shoots are sprayed with water from a spray bottle.

Leaf formation indicates that the seedlings must be placed in separate pots. The bushes are transplanted into open ground after they form a root system.
