The subtle science of pruning grapes: we analyze the most common mistakes

Good afternoon, my reader. To prune grapes, you need to shorten the shoots and foliage, then the vine will grow in the right direction. The main thing is to do the pruning correctly to increase the yield. But novice wine growers often make various mistakes, which leads to the opposite result.

Most common mistakes

It usually happens that it is a pity to cut a large number of branches, and therefore the grower removes only a few centimeters from only large branches. Because of this, the grapes do not have enough sunlight, so the vine becomes thinner, and the yield decreases, even the taste changes for the worse. An increase in the volume and quality of grapes will occur only if from fifty to ninety percent of the growth from one bush bearing fruit are cut off annually.

Another common mistake is cutting the wrong shoots. Grape beginners quite often believe that it is necessary to get rid of thin shoots, and keep the thicker ones. Others, on the other hand, remove thick shoots and leave young ones. The first and second cases are erroneous and only reduce the yield. It is necessary to harvest all the shoots from which the berries were collected annually, since by the next year the harvest will become small and immature. You need to leave shoots that have not yet borne fruit, regardless of their thickness.

Note! It is not only the choice of the right shoots that is important, but also the correct pruning technique. Mature shoots need to be left with a heel of one centimeter. If you are a beginner grower, remember that this procedure can only be done with thick branches and it is categorically impossible to do this with young shoots, as they are likely to be covered with mold and will rot.

The period for pruning grapes must also be chosen correctly. Very late is more suitable for this procedure. For the winter, when the harvest has already been harvested, the vine needs to be covered. Prune the vineyard in two weeks, maximum twenty-one days after the leaves fall off. From the first to the tenth of October, it is worth carrying out the first pruning, and the main one in the second half of October. If the variety is frost-resistant, then you can choose a later period. Do not tighten until freezing, as the vine can crack in temperatures colder than -3.

Another common mistake is that some growers leave stepchildren on the branches. Second-order shoots form on older branches and thicken the bush, thereby creating shade. In order for the plant to grow and develop, it needs nutrients and sunlight. Therefore, it is necessary to get rid of stepchildren. But to do it correctly: first, one or two leaves should grow, and then pinch off the tip of the shoot above them.

Of course, there are many other mistakes that lead to lower and quality crops. To prevent them, it is better to consult with more experienced winegrowers. You can read and study special books, watch video tutorials on the Internet, where each step is scheduled.
