Good afternoon, my reader. Currants are a very common crop that almost every gardener grows. She is unpretentious in care, is able to withstand attacks of pests and infections, and her harvest, subject to all the rules, is rich and of high quality. It can be eaten directly from the bush, canned, and boiled compotes. Many gardeners ask themselves: what types and varieties are the most common?

Varieties of culture

Shrubs with black and red berries are more common than others in garden plots. They represent the Gooseberry family, in addition to the genus they also attributed the Gooseberry itself, which was previously singled out into a separate group.

Black currant

Black currant bushes can grow up to 1-2 m, young shoots on them are pale, and adults are brown. The fruits on the bush are small, their diameter is about 1 cm, the skin is glossy, the color is black or greenish. The flowering time of the plant is from May to June, and the time to harvest comes in July-August.

1 kilogram of the harvest has about 3 thousand berries; natural food colors are made from their juice. Various syrups and liqueurs are also made from it.

It must be borne in mind that the fruits are harvested as they ripen. The fruits on the bush do not become ripe at the same time: currants from the lower part of the bush may begin to crumble when the upper fruits are not yet ripe. And the foliage from the shrub falls only in winter, it can be used for rolling vegetables, currant leaves will make vegetables elastic and prevent them from softening.

Even the leaves of different varieties are similar to each other: their edges are serrated, the lobes are triangular, the middle part is usually elongated. But the front side of the blackcurrant foliage is fluffier than that of the rest of the crop.

Sorceress, Yadrenaya, Leningradskaya, Black Pearl are the most popular varieties of Black Currant.

Red currant

Such currants have always actively grown next to rivers, for which they received the second name "porechka". Plants reach a height similar to black currant, 1-2 meters. The stems are usually grayish or yellow in color. Red currants bloom earlier, in May, and their small berries form in clusters. There is little sugar in them, so the harvest has a sour taste.

Natalie, Red Cross, Nenaglyadnaya are common varieties of Red Currant.

White currant

This variety is bred from Red Currant by selection. The following varieties are distinguished: Versailles, Belyana, Dessertnaya.

This is a subspecies of red currant, the berries of which are quite pale, not distinguished by the rich color characteristic of other varieties. They are less acidic than red berries, and some varieties have a sweet taste.

Currants are grown all over the world, but this berry is most popular in Russia. Experts are actively working in the field of breeding this plant: with the help of the Aldan grape species, the most fruitful and frost-tolerant varieties are brought out.
