Soda top dressing

Baking soda is an excellent fertilizer for currants. The product helps to stimulate the appearance of peduncles on berry bushes, to achieve the formation of a larger number of ovaries.

Thanks to sodium bicarbonate, you can improve the quality characteristics of the crop:

  • make the berries larger;
  • improve their taste.

The use of soda top dressing is especially indicated if the horticultural crop grows in conditions of increased soil acidity. It will make the soil less acidic.

Watering berry bushes with a solution of baking soda at the root can significantly prolong their fruiting. For this purpose, the currants are fed with sodium bicarbonate as follows:

  1. Abundantly irrigate the land under the bush with water.
  2. Dissolve a little food product (30 g) in settled water (10 l).
  3. Water the bush with the resulting soda solution. Consumption rate - ½ l per 1 plant.
Soda is also applicable when planting young currant bushes. A little product is poured into the planting hole (no more than 1/2 tsp. l.). The measure will prevent damage to the roots of berry crops by pests and diseases, and will stimulate the growth of the seedling.

In order for the currants to grow better, soda top dressing should be applied regularly (3 times per season). To obtain a nutrient liquid, dissolve a little baking soda (10 g) in water (10 l). The bush is watered with the finished solution or its crown is sprayed three times:

  • in early June;
  • in July (second half of the month);
  • in the second half of September as a preparation for wintering culture and for laying buds, which will appear with the arrival of spring.

The use of baking soda as an insecticide and fungicide

In the spring months, the currant suffers from aphid infestation. Small pests eat young leaves, leaving a sticky substance on them, which attracts other harmful insects to berry bushes. If the problem is not dealt with, there is a risk of losing the crop.

Baking soda is an effective folk remedy for aphid infestations. It is used as a solution. To obtain a liquid with insecticidal properties, dissolve a little sodium bicarbonate (2 tbsp. l.) in warm distilled water (1 l). The solution is enriched with fine soap chips (1 tbsp. l.). After the ingredients are completely dissolved, the currant foliage is sprayed with the finished product. A spray bottle is used for this purpose.

The solution is used within 3 hours after its preparation, after shaking well beforehand. You cannot leave the product for later. It will lose its effectiveness.

It is advisable to use laundry soap to prepare a homemade soda insecticide. It will provide better adhesion of the solution to the foliage, prolong its action, and increase the effectiveness of the use of this folk remedy.

Spraying berry bushes from aphids with soda-soap water is carried out in dry and calm weather. The processing is carried out repeatedly with a frequency of 1 time in 10 days.

Baking soda is effective not only for the defeat of currants by aphids. The solution of this product has a good effect in the fight against other pests of horticultural crops. We are talking about caterpillars, ants, slugs. It is also used as a fungicide if berry bushes suffer from a disease such as powdery mildew.
