Peonies do not grow well in strong sun, so it is better to choose shaded places for planting them, protected from all sides from drafts and winds. It is also advisable to choose a site with a slight slope in order to avoid moisture stagnation. With excessive watering or during the rainy season, root rot is often observed in peonies growing in the shade.
Advice. To avoid this problem, it is recommended to reduce the number of waterings. To avoid the appearance of gray rot, seedlings must be treated with disinfectants before planting.
If the plants are already ripe, but this problem still bothers the bushes, potassium permanganate will help. To process peonies, you need to prepare a solution: 2 grams of the drug must be diluted in 10 liters of settled or distilled water. Stir until a homogeneous pink liquid is obtained, and then water the bushes. The prepared amount of the solution should be enough to process about ten plants.
If there is no potassium permanganate at hand, wood ash or crushed coal will help correct the situation. Treatment with this remedy is desirable in the spring. The soil around the bushes is loosened along the diameter of the crown, weeds are removed and the soil is sprinkled with a thick layer of ash.
Material from a stove or barbecue will work well. Some gardeners collect ash in paper bags throughout the heating season. The accumulated amount is sufficient to treat a large number of plants.
Important. To prevent heavy rains from washing away the ash around the peonies, it is advisable to pour a thin layer of river sand or soil on top.
Improper pruning also affects flowering. If you cut the bushes close to the ground in the fall, the plants will not have enough nutrients to set the buds in the spring. It should be borne in mind that trace elements in peonies are distributed both in the rhizomes and in the shoots. It is necessary to cut branches at a distance of 10-15 centimeters from the ground. In spring, dry cuttings are pruned to give young shoots more room to grow quickly.
Fertilizer deficiency and lateral buds
Fertilizers for peonies should contain large amounts of potassium and phosphorus. In this case, many peduncles will form on the bushes. These plants need as little nitrogen as possible, since with an excess of this element in the soil, the green mass begins to grow strongly, and the buds become smaller at the same time. Top dressing is applied half a month before flowering and in the second week after flowering. Complex preparations are successfully replaced with bone meal or ash.
The fight against lateral buds also needs to be carried out constantly. Despite the fact that it is a pity to cut them, the large number of lateral flowers affects the size of the petals. In addition, if you do not cut off the lateral inflorescences, the flowering period itself will be significantly reduced.
It does not take much time and effort to care for peonies. But if you do everything right, then in the spring they will delight you with abundant flowering and a unique aroma.
