Reasons for the decline in yield

There are not many reasons for the decline in the quantity and quality of the crop, but they are all very serious.

  1. The landing site was not chosen well.
  2. Poor culture care.
  3. The seeds are not processed before planting.
  4. Improper watering or feeding.
  5. Treatment for diseases and insect pests was not performed or was not performed on time.
  6. Landing dates were miscalculated.

Landing place

The planting area should be well lit and drained. Due to stagnant water, the root system can rot. If the water balance is normalized, then the crop will be less susceptible to various diseases.

It is preferable to make high ridges for growing beets. If the beds are located in a too low and dark place, then only tops will grow, and the root crop will develop poorly. Beets do not like acidic soils, therefore, if necessary, they need to be neutralized with dolomite flour or lime.

The yield and quality of the fruit is influenced by which plants grow nearby. Beets have good compatibility with tomatoes, grains and legumes, courgettes, garlic and cucumbers. But it is not recommended to plant it next to corn, spinach, crucifers, potatoes and carrots.

Correct care

The beet growing process includes:

  • seed treatment before sowing;
  • regular watering;
  • loosening the soil;
  • top dressing.
Beets do not require much attention and special care in the event that they are suitable for the site, soil and watering. But if the plant experiences a nutritional deficiency, then this will negatively affect the taste characteristics of the root crop or lead to diseases.

Seed treatment, watering and feeding

To improve germination, it is recommended to put the seeds in hot water with the addition of potassium permanganate and a growth stimulator for a period of half an hour to 3 hours.

Immediately after the first sprouts appear, watering the beets should be frequent - once every two to three days. The younger the plant, the more it needs moisture, especially in dry weather. Irrigation should be stopped a month before harvest. It is advisable to alternate watering with loosening. The procedure must be carried out shallowly and carefully so as not to damage the roots.

In order for the root crops to grow large, it is necessary to feed the plant on time. Beets need potassium, phosphorus and nitrogen. Micronutrient deficiencies lead to poor root development.

The first time fertilizers are applied when digging the beds in May - 20 grams of ammonium nitrate, 25 grams of ammonium sulfate, 20 grams of double superphosphate, 10 grams of potassium sulfate. The second time the plant needs to be fed after the appearance of two or three leaves - 10 grams of urea per square meter of the garden. In June, pour with a solution of sodium chloride - this will be the third feeding. And for the fourth time, fertilizer is applied in July - 10 grams of ammonium nitrate, 5 grams of potassium sulfate.

Diseases and pests

Beets are susceptible to various fungal and infectious diseases. The most unpleasant and often of them is phomaosis. It attacks the root system - it will rot and collapse. To prevent this disease, first of all, crop rotation must be observed.

Beet fleas, flies and aphids often attack plantings. They eat young leaves, which can kill the beets. In this case, insecticides and various folk remedies will help. If you periodically spray the aerial part of the plant, the pests will stop attacking it, and it will develop well.

Landing dates

Seeds are often sown too early and frost kills the seedlings. A prerequisite is heating the soil to at least eight degrees to a depth of ten centimeters, which is possible only if the place for the beets is well lit by the sun. You can check the planting dates in the gardeners' calendars.

If you follow all the recommendations, then growing beets will become an easy and enjoyable activity, and the harvest will be plentiful and tasty.
