In order for this tall plant with sword-shaped leaves to grow well and look as decorative as possible, it must be properly fertilized. Lack of nutrients is fraught with poor flowering of gladiolus, crushing of buds, and a decrease in the number of arrows with peduncles. Timely fertilization can help avoid this problem.

How to fertilize the skewer correctly

In order for gladiolus to delight the grower with abundant flowering, it will be necessary to regularly feed it with folk remedies and purchased mineral compositions. It will be necessary not only to comply with the rate of application of a particular fertilizer, but also to strictly follow the fertilizing calendar.

Fertilization calendar

For the first time, an ornamental culture is fed at the stage of appearance of 3-4 leaves. Young plants need nitrogen. It will allow gladioli to grow deciduous mass.

For the first feeding of the skewer, flower growers use a urea solution. To get a liquid top dressing, dissolve the substance (3 tsp. l.) in settled water (5 l). The finished solution is poured over the flowers at the root.

Instead of urea for the first fertilization, you can use the following compositions:

  • ammonium nitrate;
  • ammonium sulfate;
  • potassium (or sodium) nitrate.
For the second time, the decorative culture is fed after the appearance of 6-7 leaves. At this stage of development, gladiolus needs complex mineral compositions rich in phosphorus, potassium, and nitrogen. For feeding a flower, purchased fertilizers for berry crops and shrubs are applicable.

The third application of dressings by flower growers is carried out after the appearance of arrows with peduncles in the plants. The skewer is fertilized with nutrient mixtures rich in phosphorus and nitrogen.

The third feeding is carried out as follows:

  1. After weeding, the beds loosen the soil.
  2. Watering of plantings is carried out.
  3. Sprinkle the earth under the flowers with superphosphate. Consumption rate - 30-40 g of granular substance per 1 m² of flower planting.
  4. Dissolve urea in water (2 tbsp. l. 10 l). The resulting nutrient liquid is poured over a skewer.

The last (fourth) fertilization involves the use of formulations containing a large amount of potassium. A little phosphorus may also be present in the dressing. Fertilizing gladioli with nitrogen is no longer required. Otherwise, there is a risk of an abrupt cessation of flowering of the decorative culture.

For the fourth feeding, flower growers use potassium sulfate dissolved in water, as well as superphosphate.

Application of foliar dressings

To speed up the flowering of the skewer and the formation of a beautifully shaped bush, experienced gardeners resort to foliar dressing. Fertilization of flowers according to this technique is carried out 3 times per season.

The first foliar feeding falls on the bud-laying phase. It helps to increase their number. For this purpose, a mixture obtained from ingredients such as potassium permanganate, copper sulfate, boric acid is applicable. It is dissolved in water and the flower planting is sprayed over the leaf.

To extend the flowering period, to give the petals a brighter color, a different composition is suitable:

  • potassium permanganate (1.5 g);
  • copper sulfate (1.5 g);
  • zinc sulfate (0.3 g);
  • cobalt nitrate (0.1 g);
  • magnesium sulfate (1g);
  • boric acid (1 g).

This nutrient mixture is dissolved in water (10 L) and sprayed with the resulting plant solution. The procedure is carried out in the last days of June. The day must be overcast. Spray the leaves of gladioli should be on both sides. It is desirable that the nutrient composition during processing falls not only on the foliage, but also on the peduncles.

The third foliar dressing is carried out at the end of July. Apply the same nutrient solution as for the second spray. The measure contributes to the best planting of children by the plant.
