Is pruning required for peonies after flowering

These flowers are perennials. After the end of budding, new buds are formed, from which flowers will appear in the future. For full growth, the culture requires the necessary nutrients and abundant green foliage. In the absence of leaves, cut peonies will weaken and die. Faded shrubs cannot be completely cut off. This is the main mistake of young gardeners. The plant only needs decorative pruning.

Experienced growers advise to cut the bushes as follows: in the summer, you should not remove the lower place from the stem on which the bud flaunted, leave 2-3 of the largest leaves on the peduncle, and the rest cut off.

At the onset of the first frost, the bush can be cut at the root. Leave small cut branches about 2-3 cm high above the buds and cover with a ten centimeter layer of humus or compost. Such a shelter saves the plant from damage during the winter frost. In the springtime, it gives them energy and strength for full development.

Caring for bushes at the end of flowering

Caring for faded plants consists of the following steps:

  1. Removing dried buds.
  2. Watering.
  3. Loosening the soil.
  4. Fertilizer treatment.
  5. Division of the age bush.

Cleaning

Peonies are lush flowers with a short flowering time (approximately two weeks). Then the inflorescences dry up, their petals fall into the bush. Dried flowers should be collected and burned, since the root system can rot from the fallen buds and diseases of the leaves and peduncles can appear.

Watering

Water the plants a short distance from the bush, because the flower's root system is quite wide. Make it around the groove to keep the liquid from flowing. To keep moisture in the soil, mulch using straw or green grass.

For watering, take settled or rainwater. Pour at least 30 liters under each bush; during drought, irrigate 2 times every seven days (in the evening).

Loosening

The moistened soil hardens over time, becomes covered with a crust. The plant feels a lack of nutrients. In order for oxygen to enter the roots, the earth must be loosened:

  • next to the stems - about 5-7 cm deep;
  • at a distance from the bush - to a depth of about 10-15 cm.

Feeding

Two weeks after the end of flowering, in the moistened soil, apply a fertilizer consisting of superphosphate (half a tablespoon) and potassium salt (1/3 tbsp. l.) per plant. The granules can be scattered over the ground. The solution is poured over the ground next to the roots.

Division and transplant

Age bushes bloom worse. To rejuvenate the plant, the roots must be divided. The best time for this process is early fall.

Transplant culture:

  1. Cut the aboveground part 2/3.
  2. Use a garden fork to remove the peony from the ground.
  3. Place in the shade for 2-3 hours.
  4. Divide the roots: remove rotten and dried parts, leave fresh stems.
  5. Plant in prepared holes, the distance between the bushes should be at least 1 m.
  6. Cover the young bush with mulch or humus.
With the right approach to the cultivation of garden plants, peonies will be able to delight their owners with beautiful, abundant flowering for a long time.
