Four options for planting strawberries correctly

  • Mar 03, 2021

Good afternoon, my reader. Experienced gardeners know that a good harvest of strawberries can only be harvested with the right agricultural practices. And a very important place among these methods is occupied by the method of planting this berry. In total, there are 4 options for planting strawberries, each of which has its own pros and cons.

And today we will consider all these planting methods at once, so that any gardener can eventually choose the most suitable one for himself.

Planting single bushes

In this case, strawberry seedlings are buried in the ground at a distance of 45-55 cm from each other. In the future, so that the whiskers of the nearest bushes do not intertwine with each other, they will need to be pruned regularly. Such care of strawberries will allow its seedlings to grow at a faster pace, which, in the end, will have a positive effect on the amount of the future harvest.

Another plus of this planting option is that the strawberries will grow very large here. Moreover, beds with a small number of strawberry bushes are much better ventilated, which, in their turn, makes practically minimal the possibility of the development of various putrefactive infections. You can also add that planting material is also well saved here.

The disadvantage of this landing option is its great labor intensity. Indeed, during the entire period of strawberry growth, you need to constantly loosen the ground near it, destroy weeds and trim excess mustache.

Planting in rows

In this embodiment, the bushes are planted 15-20 cm apart. In this case, the gap between the rows themselves should be 40-45 cm. This format of the beds will allow the gardener to move freely between the strawberry bushes.

Another plus is that such a strawberry grows well and develops, and can bring a large harvest in the future for 4-5 years.

The disadvantage of this method is, again, that the strawberries here need to be looked after in a very careful way.

Planting nests

This method is carried out by planting one bush in the center, around which 6-7 others are then planted. That is, as a result, a kind of strawberry nest is formed, shaped like a hexagon. And the distance between the seedlings in it must be made at least 6-7 cm. In this case, between each individual nests, the distance is made about 26-28 centimeters. The width between their rows varies from 35 to 40 cm.

The advantage of this planting option is that due to the increased number of bushes, it will be possible to get a very rich harvest in the future, which is almost impossible to do with conventional planting methods.

The disadvantage of this option is that you need a lot of seedlings.

Carpet planting

This option is the most popular among gardeners. This is due to the fact that it is very easy to implement and requires a minimum amount of costs. A distinctive feature of this method is that the whiskers of the plant are not trimmed here. Therefore, strawberry bushes (in this case) thrive in all the strawberry beds. And plants that are very close at the same time create (in their upper layer) a very special microclimate and form a natural mulch. Because of this, quite a few weeds appear on such beds in the future, which saves gardeners from the hard work of destroying them. Moreover, with such a planting of strawberries, the soil retains moisture under the bushes longer than usual, and therefore watering the plants can be carried out somewhat less frequently.

This variant of strawberry cultivation is well suited for those people who, for some reason, are not able to constantly care for the beds. This happens, for example, in the case when the gardener very rarely visits his own plot.

The disadvantage of this shape of strawberry beds is that over time the berries become smaller and smaller.
