Preparing seedlings for planting

It is in August that the time comes to take care of the next season's harvest and plant seedlings of strawberries and other plants. Under such conditions, seedlings have time to form generative buds and take root in a new place.

The initial stage of the studied process is the preparation of seedlings. It is necessary to inspect all seedlings and discard those with less than 3 leaves and an undeveloped root system.

You can prepare planting material using the frigo method. To do this, you need to choose healthy seedlings and cut the flower stalks from them: this stimulates the development of the mustache in the coming season. On strawberry seedlings, you need to leave only the shoots located next to the mother bush. During the summer, these shoots need to be watered regularly and mineral fertilizers applied to the soil.

At the end of the summer cottage season, in late autumn, the plants must be dug up and all but a few young leaves must be removed from them. Then the resulting shoots are placed in plastic bags and stored in this form in the freezer. In conditions of low temperatures (0... -2 ºС), seedlings can be up to 1 year. In spring, plants can be transplanted into growing containers as preparation for outdoor placement. The soil in the container should be at the level of the root collar and the roots should be straightened out.

To reduce the amount of work and save time, seedlings that are already rooted can be purchased. But such a purchase should be approached responsibly and carefully inspected the product. A healthy plant should have fresh and bright foliage, the diameter of its root collar is about 7 mm or more. If the foliage of the seedlings is twisted, wrinkled, or all stained, you have an unhealthy plant in front of you that will not give a high-quality harvest.

Choosing a place for growing and planting strawberries

For growing strawberries, a sunny place that is protected from gusts of wind is suitable. The crop prefers light, neutral or slightly acidic soil. If the acidity of the soil is too high, it is neutralized with lime (1-2 kg per 1 m 2). And in order to increase the fertility of the soil, 2-3 buckets of humus are introduced into the soil per 1 m 2.

Fertilize the soil before planting strawberries. 2 weeks before placing the seedlings, the soil must be fertilized with potash compounds and 40 g of double superphosphate. These drugs are used dry. After planting the plants, they are sprinkled with a nutrient mixture, which includes soil from the site, compost and manure.

We recommend planting strawberries in rows. The distance between plants in rows must be 15-20 cm. Strawberry care will subsequently determine the quality of the crop. If you remove the mustache in a timely manner, apply top dressing and observe the correct irrigation regime, the culture will thank you with a plentiful and tasty harvest.
