Good afternoon, my reader. Novice gardeners can make a serious mistake when propagating violets, this will harm the cuttings and the flower will not grow. Someone incorrectly cuts a leaf cutting, someone does not pay enough attention to soil preparation and rooting. These and other errors of florists will be discussed below.

Incorrect cutting preparation

When choosing a leaf for propagation, some gardeners make a mistake and prefer those cuttings that are located at the bottom of the plant. Novice growers believe that they are more robust and best suited for propagation. However, this opinion is erroneous: regenerative processes are slowed down in old leaves, they may not take root, but rot.

As a cutting, you need to choose a strong, healthy leaf from the middle of the outlet. Such specimens are already quite mature, they will easily take root.

So, you have chosen the right leaf cutting, but this is not the end of the preparation of the planting material. There are other preparatory stages to be carried out at which you can make a mistake:

  1. Some growers do not use tools, but tear off the leaf stalk with their bare hands. This is a gross mistake that leads to serious tissue damage, and subsequently the violet will not be able to take root, and the damaged part will die. To avoid such a problem, you need to use a sharpened knife or blade that has been previously disinfected. If the sheet has been damaged, you need to update the cut on it.
  2. Performing a straight cut. This manipulation reduces the surface area through which the cutting will receive water and nutrients. Rooting will occur, but there will be too few outlets. Make a 45 ° cut instead of a straight cut.

Errors when rooting in water

At this stage, the wrong container is often chosen. A clean container, preferably dark in color, is suitable for rooting the cutting, since the roots form faster without light. As a preventive measure for the formation of putrefactive bacteria, the water is preliminarily boiled and 1 crushed tablet of activated carbon is placed in it.

When rooting in water, the following mistakes are made:

  1. Placing the sheet too deep into the jar. The optimal location of the cutting is a cut 1-1.5 cm under water, does not touch the bottom or walls of the jar.
  2. Abundant lighting. Novice growers believe that an excess of sunlight will have a positive effect on the development of the plant, but the cuttings only need diffused light.

Improper rooting in soil

Often, planting material is placed directly into open ground. With such a decision, in order to form as many outlets as possible, it is important to avoid the following mistakes:

  1. Excessive deepening of the planting material. Cuttings should not be placed deeper than 2 cm in the ground. If this rule is neglected, roots will form, but the daughter plants will not reach the surface of the earth.
  2. The container is too large. When planting a cuttings in a large pot, the plant does not get enough air. A plastic yoghurt cup with a diameter of no more than 5 cm is ideal as a growing container.
  3. Growing in unsuitable soil. Even fertile and nutrient-rich soil from a garden plot may not work well for young cuttings if it is too dense. You need to prepare a mixture of 1 part garden soil and 3 parts sand. The addition of peat, sphagnum is encouraged.
