"Green" land. How to fight and prevent

  • Mar 15, 2021

Good afternoon, my reader. Green soil is algae and moss that appear on the surface as a result of an erroneous microclimate. Perhaps the green cover of the soil is beautiful, but still harmful, and it is necessary to get rid of it.

Causes of occurrence

  1. Excessive moisture.
  2. Poor air exchange in the ground.
  3. Excess phosphorus.
  4. Poor greenhouse ventilation.

First you need to figure out what you have to deal with.

If it is moss, then it will look like a bright plush cover. Mosses do not have a dense root layer, they are soft, and if you touch them, they easily crumble. If a certain light yellow or greenish bloom is visible on the soil, then these are algae, which consist of microorganisms.

If you have noticed any of these parasites, then most likely there is another. Therefore, the entire soil area must be checked for the presence of moss and algae, otherwise it will be difficult to cope with them.

How to deal with moss

Moss spores can penetrate deep into the soil. Areas of growth must be removed. Watering is carried out directly under the vegetables and to exclude the formation of shade in the greenhouse. This must be done so that the parasite does not reappear. The problem is that these methods may not fix the problem forever, because moss spores have the ability to sleep for a long time in the soil, waiting for the best conditions for re-growth.

In order to prevent their possible awakening, it is necessary to very scrupulously clean the greenhouse, in particular, to eliminate the possibility of shade. It is necessary to add as much light as possible using foil for this. You will also have to wipe all the wooden parts of the structure with a special solution (ferrous sulfate), and the stone frame of the greenhouse and the foundation elements with a solution of soda and water. It is also necessary to ventilate the room, but this must be done carefully, avoiding drafts. By purchasing a ready-made solution of copper sulfate and slaked lime or preparing it at home, you can get rid of spores in the soil. You can also plant buckwheat, mustard, wheat or some other green manure plants in this place that grow quickly and improve the quality of the soil.

As a last resort, you can use chemicals or completely change the land.

How to deal with algae

Since algae grow on the surface of the soil and love light, they can be destroyed using mulching. Mulching is covering the soil with mulch. You can use straw or sawdust, pine bark or fallen needles, peat.

Preventing Algae and Moss

The most effective way to deal with a problem is to prevent it. Therefore, it is advisable to install the greenhouse at a certain elevation, avoiding shaded areas. Installing drip irrigation under each plant will not only help save water, but also provide the necessary moisture. It is necessary to get rid of excessive phosphorus saturation of the soil. This is very difficult to do. The soil should be systematically cleaned of harmful microorganisms, then the phosphorus content will normalize on its own.

The composition of the soil is very important. To maintain its quality, certain rules must be followed:

  • to enrich the land with organic and mineral fertilizers;
  • dig up systematically;
  • do not plant crops in the same place all the time, you need to choose different places for planting the same plant;
  • alternate planting of permanent plants and fast-growing, so-called green manure crops.
