Rule # 1

Timely cleaning

Garlic is available in winter and summer. Therefore, it must be removed at different times.

So garlic planted in late autumn is called winter, and it should be harvested at the end of July. Early-ripening varieties are dug up 85-95 days after germination, and late-ripening ones - after 100-110 days.

You can understand that it is time to remove the garlic by the appearance of the plant. Its arrow begins to dry, the tips turn yellow, the inflorescences crack. For summer garlic, planted at the end of May, this is the first signal to harvest.

The harvesting time also depends on the planting material. If you planted garlic with cloves, young heads ripen 25 days earlier than the earliest varieties of winter garlic. Then the plants ripen, which were grown from small cloves, and only then from medium and large ones.

Remember to dig up the garlic in the morning or evening when the sun is not too hot. Garlic doesn't like dry weather.

Spring garlic is planted in spring, therefore it is harvested later than winter garlic: at the end of August - mid-September. Try to do this before the rainy season, otherwise the plant heads will get wet and poorly stored. Such garlic is prone to decay.

Rule # 2

Storing garlic

After removing garlic, it is important to store it correctly to preserve its beneficial properties. The following techniques will help to avoid drying out, rotting and germination:

  • Storage in glass containers - before that, it must be well processed (warmed up over a fire or doused with boiling water and dried).
  • In flour or salt - put flour or salt and garlic in layers in a glass jar. The plant must first burn the bottoms.
  • Dissolve a finely chopped candle in paraffin - in a water bath. Dip the heads of garlic into the resulting liquid. Once frozen, it will be stored as in a vacuum.
  • In vegetable oil - well dried garlic is placed in a container with vegetable oil. Remember that it can then only be used in hot dishes.
  • In sawdust - put the garlic in a box with rotted sawdust, but so that there is a distance between the heads.
  • Braids are braided - the garlic is dried and a braid is weaved from the dry ends. Store in a suspended state.
  • In a canvas bag - place the garlic in a clean, dry bag. Tie tightly and store in a cool dry place.
  • In the ground - put the garlic in a box with clean dry soil. This method is considered the most practical, since the plant is in its natural environment.
