Family onion varieties

There are quite a few varieties and varieties of crops. Of the most successful, the following can be distinguished: Off-season, Knyazhich, Siberian Yellow, Albik, Velikoustyugsky, Seryozha.

One of the most popular varieties of family onions is shallots - in common people, "shrike", "kushchevka". In addition to its taste, it is distinguished by a high content of vitamins and microelements.

It differs in the small size of the bulbs (about 5 cm in length and weighing about 30-45 g), which grow in nests of 3 to 10 pieces. The bulbs are oblong, round or oval in shape.

This type of onion can be stored for a long time - from six months to a year, without losing its juiciness and delicate taste. Well suited for spring planting.

INTERESTING: shallots are widely used in cooking: pickled and fresh, in first and second courses, in salads and even desserts.

Boarding time

The time when you can start planting a family depends on the weather conditions of each individual region. In a southern climate, the culture takes root well when it is planted in the ground in early April. For the middle lane, mid-April is suitable. If frosts persist for a long time, then you should postpone this process, postponing it to the end of April - beginning of May. This will help avoid the shooting process.

REFERENCE: family onions are resistant to temperature extremes. Its root system develops well at t from 0 to +25 degrees Celsius, but is able to withstand t up to -7. The leaves of the crop are even better adapted to high and low temperatures (from -8 to +40 degrees).

Planting of agricultural crops can be carried out in November - early December, but for this there are special late varieties, such as Garant, Ryzhik, Krepysh, Sophocles, Albik, etc.

The soil

Multi-bud onion is an unpretentious culture, therefore it takes root well on various types of soil with neutral acidity. But the most suitable for it are moist soils: humus loam and humus-sandy. It is good if potatoes or carrots were previously grown on them.

How to plant correctly

Before planting, the bulbs must be etched in a solution of potassium permanganate or copper sulfate for 15-25 minutes.

Onion crops should be planted in rows, the distance between which should be about 35-45 cm. In order for the root system to receive sufficient moisture and the amount of nutrients, the planting depth should not exceed 3-4 cm.

IMPORTANT: make sure that the distance between the bulbs is sufficient - about 20-35 cm, since a sufficiently voluminous bundle of leaves will subsequently be formed. Due to the lack of access to sunlight, the bulbs can grow small.

Proper care of family onions

Before planting on poor soils, you should feed them (at the rate of 2-4 kg per 1 sq. m) a mixture of rotted compost with two tablespoons of ash, one tablespoon of superphosphate and 1 tablespoon of urea. Rich soils do not need to be fertilized first.

RECOMMENDED: To preserve moisture and in the future to avoid regular weeding and loosening, mulch the soil on which you grow family onions. To do this, lay the straw or cut grass in a layer 5-8 cm high.

For proper growth and development of a plant, it is necessary that the air humidity is low - about 65-70%, and the soil - increased. During the onion growth period, it is enough to water it 1-2 times a week, making sure that the ground is sufficiently moist.

To avoid the disease of the culture with gray rot, it is necessary to update the planting material every three to four years, diluting it with planting seeds.

Harvesting from the garden

Harvesting of family onions should be done in early to mid-July. It is better to start pulling the vegetable out of the ground on a sunny morning, leaving it in the garden until the evening. Then remove and within 10-14 days, dry in a well-ventilated place protected from moisture. Dried leaves are removed, and family onions are placed in whole nests in boxes and wooden boxes.

If you see that about 50-70% of the plant's leaves have already died, do not delay harvesting. The delay may further lead to poor keeping quality.

We hope you heed the tips and tricks above and grow a good crop of delicious multi-root onions.
