Yulin: how a top-secret nuclear submarine base was found thanks to a random snapshot

Satellites in orbit of the earth have long been a real scourge of secret bases. Now you can't just take and build a military facility without everyone around you knowing about it. With the well-known today Yulin submarine base, which was once a top-secret object, it turned out even more ironic. They found her by accident, thanks to a satellite image, which was not taken by a spy apparatus at all.

Hainan is a beautiful island in the South China Sea with golden beaches, wonderful nature and many modern tourist attractions! It is also home to one of China's once most secret naval bases, built specifically for nuclear submarines. This complex is called Yulin.

In fact, they knew for a long time that there is a naval base on the island. If only because a military port cannot be hidden from others. This was evident both from the boards of tourist ships and from the boards of aircraft. In addition, a significant part of the island was closed to tourists. However, no one knew (except for American intelligence) that Yulin was being used to park Chinese nuclear submarines.

The CIA had guesses, but there was no confirmation of this fact. Ships were seen in the naval port, but not submarines. This changed literally recently - in August 2020, when Planet Labs, which deals with production of space satellites and drones, published on the network another bundle of images from their devices. There was no limit to the surprise and joy of the CIA that day, as one of the photographs of Yulin caught the silhouette of a submarine, which, apparently, enters an underwater cave.

It is quite obvious that the Yulin Naval Base, in addition to the port, also has an underground complex similar to the Soviet nuclear submarine base in the Crimea - Balaklava.
