In fact, they knew for a long time that there is a naval base on the island. If only because a military port cannot be hidden from others. However, no one knew (except for American intelligence) that Yulin was being used to park Chinese nuclear submarines.

This changed literally recently - in August 2020, when Planet Labs, which deals with production of space satellites and drones, published on the network another bundle of images from their devices. There was no limit to the surprise and joy of the CIA that day, as one of the photographs of Yulin caught the silhouette of a submarine, which, apparently, enters an underwater cave.
It is quite obvious that the Yulin Naval Base, in addition to the port, also has an underground complex similar to the Soviet nuclear submarine base in the Crimea - Balaklava.
