What is it and what is it for

Urea (the second name is "urea") is one of the most popular fertilizers, which has a lot of useful properties, including the ability to fight plant diseases. It consists of almost 50% nitrogen, thanks to which, as a result of a long chain of chemical transformations, occurring during its interaction with microelements contained in the soil, nitrate ions and ammonium ions are formed, absorbed by crops.

Feeding methods and methods for its correct implementation

In total, there are two options for feeding plants using urea: root and foliar. Let's analyze each in more detail.

  1. Root. The main essence of the method is the introduction of granular urea particles directly into the soil where the crop is planted. Typically, the depth varies between 5-10 centimeters (depending on the structure of the soil), since in the open air the fertilizer instantly evaporates and, naturally, does not bring any benefit. If there are no plants on the site yet, it is recommended to lay urea about 1-2 weeks before sowing in order to avoid its contact with the planting material and causing harm to it.

  2. Foliar means the treatment of foliage with an aqueous solution of a substance in a ratio of 1 to 200. This method is the most popular, as it provides complete treatment of the entire plant and reduces the risk of infection with various diseases and the appearance of parasites.

How do you know when to fertilize?

There are many visible factors that can serve as a wake-up call for action. If the leaves begin to turn yellow and fall off, the shoots weaken, and the buds are practically not formed - you should not postpone the procedure indefinitely.

Properties, advantages and disadvantages of urea

This product is excellent for feeding garden and home flowers, berries, vegetables and fruits. However, one should not forget that any interference in the natural process of cultural development has negative consequences:

  • if urea is used improperly, ammonia vapors, which are extremely harmful to vegetation, can be released;
  • an excess of substance dooms your shoots to death, or, at least, entails a decrease in seed germination.
That is why you should take a responsible attitude to the fertilization process, observe the storage conditions of the substance and try not to combine it with ash and fertilizers based on lime and calcium, since you can definitely benefit from this not to wait.

But not everything is as bad as it seems. Urea has a number of positive aspects, for the sake of which it is worth trying to increase your harvest or save the appearance of the front garden. For example:

  • it is absorbed very quickly;
  • does not leave burns on foliage;
  • prevents premature flowering of crops so that their life does not end after the first frost;
  • increases immunity to diseases and pests;
  • improves the structure and quality of the soil;
  • reduces the level of harmful substances in the soil.

Have a nice season!
