Before starting work, you need to consider the following points regarding the crops that you plan to plant:

  • The growing season of a particular plant.
  • Blooming time for each crop.
  • The height that plants reach.
  • Soil requirements.
  • Light and humidity requirements.
  • Compatibility of cultures with each other.

If this is your first time planting a flower bed, we recommend starting with perennials. They are easy to care for, unpretentious and compatible with almost all plants.

Before starting work, divide the future flower garden into zones according to microclimate, illumination, soil composition and other parameters. Then you can immediately figure out where and which plants will be the main ones, and which ones are better to put in the background.

When distributing crops, consider their height. If a particular plant grows more than a meter in height, you should not plant them more than 1-2 copies per square meter. The same goes for the spreading flowers that form a lush bush: if you plant too many of them, they will strangle your neighbors.

Flowerbeds look good, where plants are planted in tiers, from undersized to the highest. If the flower garden is visible from all sides, then tall plants are planted in the center, if only on one side - their place is at the far edge.

Consider the timing of flowering. Then, starting with groves or crocuses in early spring, the flower garden will "pass the baton" to tulips, primroses, then lilies of the valley, aquilegia, in the summer - peonies, poppies, lilies, then petunias and viols. Rose bushes generally bloom all summer until frost - like phlox, morning glory, felicia.

If we take shrubs, then buldenezh, lilac, honeysuckle and jasmine bloom at different times, perfectly complementing the picture with flower beds. You can also grow hedges from kampsis or clematis, rose hips or other plants.

How to arrange a flower bed

If you don't have much experience yet, start with a simple design. You can later move on to more complex projects. Here are some options even for beginners:

  1. Rabatka is a rectangular flower garden on which flowers of approximately the same height are grown. The result is a colorful carpet of flowering plants.
  2. A mixborder is a ribbon-stretched flower bed, usually formed along a path. On it, as the name suggests, flowers and ornamental grasses are planted in a mixture. The order can be arbitrary or regular.
  3. Rockery - a flower bed in the form of a plane, dotted with decorative stones. A small selection of plants is used here. Rockeries often combine perennials and low conifers (for example, decorative thuja).
  4. Alpine slide - in fact, the same rockery, but decorated in the form of a stone pyramid, in which the cobblestones themselves are stacked in tiers, and the gaps are filled with a nutritious substrate and flowers are planted. This is already a rather "advanced" form of a flower garden: you need to take into account the size of the root system in plants, drainage to remove excess moisture. Usually a slide (or, as it is also called, a rock garden) is made in the form of a circle or an oval, often combining with a small fountain or an artificial waterfall - then you need to plant moisture-loving culture.
  5. Arabesque. This flower bed is suitable for large areas. Its essence is that flowers are planted so that they would form patterns or geometric shapes as a result. In large parks, you can see arabesques in the form of coats of arms or inscriptions, but on a personal plot it is better to limit yourself to concentric circles, a clear square, triangle, or something similar.

How to decorate a flower garden?

As a decoration, you can use both ready-made plaster or plastic figurines, and homemade ones, even from junk material.

Also useful:

  • Old tires. You can make multi-level flower beds from them, placing them in tiers and filling them with earth, or simply cut in half and dug into the ground so that you get a curb.
  • Plastic bottles. Large-volume bottles (3-5 l) make good pots for hanging flowers, and from “polorashek” - interesting borders.
  • Frame wire and stones. Figures woven from wire and filled with stones are called gabions. This is a good frame for a vertical flower bed.
  • Fragments of red and white bricks.
In a word, decorating a flower bed requires only imagination - everything can be used.
