Even today, the life and life of many representatives of the peoples of the North is not too different from how their distant ancestors lived and worked. It is enough to look at the wardrobe of some reindeer breeders: they still wear their own clothes and shoes made of animal skins. It looks so not very practical, at least against the background of modern factory down jackets and boots. Therefore, it becomes interesting: why the peoples of the north do not want to part with their traditional costume?
Many "civilized" residents can quite logically assume that the numerous photos of the same reindeer breeders of the North in traditional fur clothes are all staged photographs. This practice really takes place in relation to peoples who still live in a "traditional" way. However, in the case of reindeer herders, the use of old fur clothing is not a masquerade. This fact will be confirmed by any person who happened to visit the north and find local residents at work.
Reindeer herders prefer traditional warm clothes for one simple reason - they are much better than what stores can offer. And what is no less important - it is cheaper. In addition, reindeer herders can darn it themselves if necessary. At the same time, this applies for the most part to the working wardrobe, and only the upper part of it. Reindeer breeders' underwear is usually ordinary modern. Many people wear all the same jeans, over which special fur stockings are pulled - kitties.
Kitties do not have a "shop" analogue. At the same time, they are extremely warm and waterproof, which is especially important when working in the tundra, since from time to time reindeer herders have to jump into the water. Kitties are made from the skins of local animals. Sew them with fur outside and decorate them in every possible way. Warm stockings-boots are fastened with garters.
Northerners do not like modern jackets. They are said to be uncomfortable, impractical and, most importantly, not warm enough for long-term work in the tundra compared to the traditional warm clothing of reindeer breeders. Instead of jackets, the inhabitants of the north wear malitsa made from reindeer skins. However, under them they can (and most often wear) quite civilized sweaters and shirts. Mittens and hoods are also made from reindeer skins.
And here many have to ask: if kitties and malitsa are so warm, then why are they not worn by everyone who lives and works in the north (including various scientists and industrial workers who live there)? The answer is simple: the clothes of reindeer breeders are very specific. It may seem strange, but it requires skill in wearing. In addition, it is not suitable for long, hard and intense work. Excellent heat retention comes at the cost of overheating in such clothes. Therefore, the traditional wardrobe of northerners is still not suitable for the work of some oilmen or geologists.
