Why in St. Petersburg they built houses with tiny nooks in the yards, which are now not used

  • Jun 10, 2021

Even those who have never been to this beautiful city on the Neva have probably heard of small courtyards surrounded by residential buildings. Well yards do not differ in functionality, as a rule, even garbage bins are not placed there. But this is not the most interesting thing. In such courtyards, there are nooks in the corners. Their dimensions are approximately one meter by one meter. Why were they made when the buildings were being built?

And if everything is more or less clear with the courtyards themselves, then why these nooks-corners were created is not clear to many.

Even local residents have several versions on this score. Some argue that small rooms for servants were built in these places. Others say that such an architectural solution is necessary so that the wind does not blow.

There is another version, which is that firewood was stored here at the time of stove heating. The tenants collected the amount of firewood they needed and carried it to their apartments. In order to deliver them to the upper floor, special winches were installed, which successfully coped with the task assigned to them. These corners were more common in apartment buildings. But this version also raises doubts, since with the climate of this city it is at least unreasonable to store firewood in the open air. If they had not gotten wet in the rain, then they would have simply become damp and not suitable for the firebox.

Another explanation, perhaps the most plausible, is that such openings with a window were made so that more light could enter individual rooms and they could be ventilated. Most often, this side was the kitchen or corridor.
